Domi Mendezona led NU with 10 points and 4 assists Vikings Pull Away to Defeat Eagles 11/30/2013 7:38:27 PM BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Host Western Washington University women's basketball team used a big first half run to pull away and defeat Northwest University, 83-44, to claim top honors at the 17th annual Lynda Goodrich Classic in the final day of action Saturday at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the WWU campus. The contest was an exhibition contest for the Eagles, who remain at 5-3 for the season. WWU never trailed, but the Eagles tied the game at 13-13 six minutes into the first half, and the Vikings led by just three, 22-19, with less than nine minutes left in the first half. WWU then put the contest out of reach with a 19-0 run, holding the Eagles scoreless for more than seven minutes, enabling the Vikings to take a 45-22 lead at halftime. Domi Mendezona had 10 points and four assists for the Eagles (5-3). Alyssa Dario added 9 and Jordan Asher scored 8 points. The Vikings defense held the Eagles to just 28% field-goal shooting (16-of-58). Sanda Milovic and Chanara Greene each had 6 rebounds to lead NU. Milovic was named to the All-Tournament team. It was the 22nd straight home court victory for the Vikings, who improved to 3-3. Tournament MVP and freshman Tia Briggs scored a game-high 16 points and teammate Jenni White had 13 points, all first half points, and had a game high six assists. Sarah Hill, Katie Colard and Kiana Gandy each had 10 points for WWU. The Vikings held a 52-34 advantage in rebounding. The victory was also the 12th straight for WWU at the Goodrich Classic, and its 31st in 34 games overall. The Vikings have tied or won 15 of the 17 tourney titles. "It was a good learning experience for us against a team that is always very strong," said Ken Crawford, NU head coach. "I was happy with the way we played most of the game and we will definitely get better as a result." Briggs was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates White and Hill. Sanda Milovic of Northwest, Chelsea Haskey of Saint Martin's and Shelly Kilcup of Pacific Lutheran were also named to the all-tourney team. The Eagles return to Kirkland and will open CCC play next Friday and Saturday when they host the College of Idaho and Eastern Oregon.
