EUGENE, Ore. – It was a long distance showcase on Saturday night with 24 three-pointers finding the net as the Northwest Christian University men's basketball team took down Linfield College, 73-57 in the Morse Event Center. Senior Coleton Baker hit five of those triples, accounting for a game-high 28 points for NCU in the victory.
The Beacons (7-3) shot 45% from the field in the game including a 12-for-26 effort from beyond the arch. Linfield also hit 12 treys, getting ten to fall during a failed second-half comeback attempt.
The Beacons stout defense held the Wildcats to just 5-for-26 shooting as they built a 27-14 lead at the halftime. The 14 points allowed sets a new school record for a single-half, breaking a 16-point result against Puget Sound Christian College in 2007. Baker scored eleven points in the first half including a pair of late three-pointers to help stretch the lead.
Linfield's long range shooting in the second half allowed the Wildcats to remain in the game, climbing to within nine points at one juncture. However, NCU's counterattack was enough to hold off their opponent for the 16-point win.
Baker (pictured) finished the night shooting 8-for-15 from the field, including a 5-for-11 mark from three-point range. He added four assists and two steals. Spencer Coleman added 18 points and seven rebounds while Austin Kuemper finished with ten points and a game-high eight rebounds. Harley Turner came off the bench to score six points, adding a game-high six assists.
Linfield (2-4) was led by Ryan Potter who took over the offensive effort for the Wildcats, shooting 7-for-11 from three-point range in the second half alone. Potter scored 24 points on 8-for-16 shooting, with every attempt coming behind the arc.
NCU will return to action on Tuesday, traveling for an exhibition against Seattle Pacific University, currently ranked no. 14 in NCAA Division II. Then on Wednesday the Beacons will remain in Washington, facing St. Martin's University. Both games are set for 7:00 pm start times.
