McMINNVILLE, Ore.—Returning yet another player to the fold after several injuries to start the year, Concordia defeated Linfield 64-57 in a near wire-to-wire win inside the Ted Wilson Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
The win snapped a nine-game losing streak for Concordia (2-11) while the Wildcats fell to 3-5 on the season despite a combined 45 points from Kaely Maltman and Katelyn Hanson.
Holding the home team to 24.2 percent shooting from the floor in the first half, Concordia got offensive early contributions from
Caitlyn McCutcheon (Portland, Ore./St. Mary's Academy) (7),
McKenna Daly (Livermore, Calif./Granada H.S.) (6) and
Lexi Campbell (Brentwood, Calif./Heritage H.S.) (6) to secure a 30-19 lead at the half.
The Cavs boosted its advantage to as many as 16 points on a
Janae Klarich (Granger, Wash./Granger H.S.) 3-pointer with 16:55 remaining, but the Wildcats would battle back, pulling to within three on a Henson jumper midway through the half.
With nine of her 11 second-half points coming in the final two minutes,
Briannah Smith (San Francisco, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral) helped CU seal the win. Smith was 6-of-6 six from the free throw line and added an assist and a key rebound down the stretch to give the Cavs the seven-point win.
Campbell and McCutcheon would go on to share the team lead with 14 points each, one more than Smith. Klarich, meanwhile, filled the box score with six points, seven assists and a team-leading eight rebounds while committing just a single turnover.
With Smith's confidant stroke, CU hit 14-of-17 from the free throw line.
Maltman led Linfield with 24 points while Henson finished with 21 points and a game-high 13 rebounds as the duo comprised more than 75 percent of the teams scoring.
Concordia returns to action on Saturday, December 21 when it closes out the year by facing Warner Pacific College in a CCC road match. The Cavs will open 2014 at home against Eastern Oregon on Jan. 3.
