EUGENE, Ore.. – The Northwest Christian University men's basketball remains undefeated in the Cascade Collegiate Conference after knocking off Northwest University on Friday evening, 72-65 in the Morse Event Center.
NCU held the Eagles to 39% shooting and 20 points under their season scoring average in the game and clung to a six-point halftime lead throughout a tense second-half.
The first half featured six ties and seven lead changes. Northwest held their biggest lead, 17-12 with 11:56 to play, but a six-point run for the Beacons gave the lead back to NCU. Later, with 3:01 to play, NU secured a 29-26 lead, but the Beacons rolled off nine straight points to end the half, heading into the locker room with a 35-29 advantage.
NCU pushed the lead to as many as eight points in the second half and were out in front 53-45 with 10:57 remaining. A 9-2 run by the Eagles brought them all the way back to within one, 55-54 with 8:25 to go and Northwest eventual grabbed the lead, 60-59 on a pair of free throws from Michael Russo at the 4:13 mark
The Beacons responded with back-to-back layups from Austin Kuemper and never looked back, making good on nine free throws in the final minute to claim the victory.
The Beacons (8-4, 2-0 CCC) were led by Kuemper (pictured), scoring 23 points and 11 rebounds. Javonte Byrd scored 13 points along with six rebounds, three assists and a game-high four steals. Coleton Baker added eleven points, as did Travis Pacos who proved to be a catalyst defensively with two steals and five offensive rebounds. Spencer Coleman added ten points and a team-high four assists. NCU shot 44% from the field and collected 11 steals in the game.
Northwest (11-3, 2-1) was led by Michael Greene's double-double, scoring 26 points and 11 rebounds. Namanja Grujicic also posted a double-double with 12 points and ten boards and Ryan McIntosh buried a trio of three-pointers, scoring ten. The Eagles out-rebounded NCU, 40-38.
Northwest Christian, one of only two undefeated teams remaining in the CCC, will return to action on Saturday night, playing host to The Evergreen State College (1-9, 0-3) at 7:30 pm.
