EUGENE, Ore.. – The Northwest Christian University men's basketball team is 3-0 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference for the first time in school history and alone in first-place in the CCC after a 68-55 win over The Evergreen State College on Saturday night in the Morse Event Center.
The Beacons never trailed and shot 44% in the game, out-rebounding the Geoducks, 42-32 as they improve to 9-4 on the season. Their ninth win ties the total number of victories from the entire 2012-2013 campaign. Evergreen shot 34% from the floor and move to 1-10 overall, 0-4 in the CCC.
A layup by Javonte Byrd in the first 15 seconds sent the Beacons off on a 9-0 run to start the game. NCU was soon ahead by 15 points, 10-4. The Geoducks would claw their way back to within six points, 25-19 on a three-pointer by Kyle Calhoun, but NCU took a 32-23 lead into the intermission.
Evergreen was resilient in the second half, scratching all the way back to within one point, 43-42 with under ten minutes to play in the game. NCU, however, put the pedal to the medal and used a 13-2 run to stretch the lead back out to 12 points with under five to play. It remained a double-digit margin for the duration.
Head Coach Luke Jackson said, "I was proud of our guys for coming out in the first five minutes and establishing our tempo. They didn't turn the ball over or take quick shots. We got up early and maintained the lead for the entire game, which is exactly what you hope for. Evergreen is a tough team to put away because of their athleticism and their ability to score from anywhere on the floor and it was great to get the job done tonight."
Northwest Christian was led by Travis Pacos (pictured), scoring 20 points along with nine rebounds as the junior shot 7-for-11 from the field. Spencer Coleman produced a double-double, scoring 15 points and ten rebounds and Coleton Baker added 15 points, leading all players with seven assists.
