ORANGE BEACH, Ala.—Avenging its only loss of the season, Concordia University defeated Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University 1-0 in the NAIA National Championship quarterfinals, played at Orange Beach Sportsplex on Wednesday.
Concordia (20-1-1) will face No. 1-seeded Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.) in the semifinals on Friday.
Senior captain
Hannah Kimsey (Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River H.S.) used a perfectly placed pass from
Jasmin Ayala (Simi Valley, Calif./Valley Christian H.S.) in the 59th minute for the lone goal of the game to send Concordia into the national semifinals for the seventh time since 2003.
Following a blocked shot near the 18-yard line, defender
Jasmin Ayala (Simi Valley, Calif./Valley Christian H.S.) made an extended run off a counter attack to initiate the score. Covering nearly 50 yards on the run, Ayala then split a pair of players with a slotted pass to Kimsey, who quickly found space between two more defenders.
After a couple of minor touches, Kimsey launched an 18-yard blast into the upper corner for the eventual game-winning score.
Concordia outshot the Eagles 15-to-4 with Embry-Riddle (16-5-1) managing just two shots in each half.
Embry-Riddle 's best scoring opportunity came in the 20th minute as Martine Olsen found herself on a breakaway which forced CU keeper
Olivia Brock (Olympia, Wash./Olympia H.S.) to race forward for a denial. Meeting the ball just before Olsen, Brock erased the threat and preserved the shutout.
Concordia nearly got on the board early in the first half with several corner kicks while Kimsey almost put the Cavs up in the waning moments of the half with a shot that rolled perilously along the goal line, but failed to completely cross over the line.
The Concordia win returned the favor as Embry-Riddle defeated the Cavaliers 2-1 in a September match played in Daytona Beach, Florida.
NOTES: Concordia improved to 6-3-2 in the quarterfinals… Concordia and Lindsey Wilson have met four previous time in postseason action with the Blue Raiders owning the No. 1 seed on all four occasions… Alternating wins and losses, Concordia is 3-3-0 in national semifinals…The Cavaliers last played in a national semifinal in 2011 when it defeated Pt.
