EUGENE, Ore. – Advantage Luke Jackson. The first ever battle between Father-in-Law Steve Maston, head coach at Corban University, and son-in-law Jackson, head coach at NCU, goes to the Beacons as they win the Cascade Conference opener, 67-55.

The Beacons (6-3, 1-0 CCC) shot 53% in the game and survived a late charge by Corban (3-5, 0-1). The Warriors shot 40% from the field and were just 5-for-23 from three-point land in the defeat.

Northwest Christian jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and held Corban without a field goal for the first four minutes. The Beacons spread the lead to as many as 14 points and, shooting 16-for-25 in the frame, claimed a 39-27 advantage at the intermission.

The Beacons went on another substantial run to begin the second half, scoring the first nine points to take a 21-point lead, 48-27 with 16:57 to play. The Warriors slowly began to chip away at the deficit, climbing to within six points with just under five minutes remaining. But NCU responded, going on a 10-4 run to close out the victory.

Sophomore Austin Kuemper once again led the charge for the Beacons with a double-double, shooting 12-for-20 from the field to score 27 points and 12 rebounds. Travis Pacos scored 12 points in the first half and finished with a season-high 19, shooting 3-for-5 from three-point range. Spencer Coleman added 14 points and five rebounds and Coleton Baker ended his effort with eight assists, two blocks and four points.

"It was a good team win tonight," said Jackson. "We got out ahead early and sometimes it's hard to play with a lead. You become hesitant to attack because you want to preserve the lead. I challenged the guys in a time out to make simple plays and I am proud of the way they responded, gritting out the win."

Corban was guided by Cyrus Ward, posting team-highs of 16 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Caleb Herzberg came off the bench to hit a trio of three-pointers, finishing with 15 points. Josiah Sebens and Jordan Carter added eight points each.

The victory gives coach Jackson his first conference victory, but it comes with a bittersweet feel, having accomplished the feat against his father-in-law. He said, "It was tough because I'm rooting for Steve and I want him to do well. It was a great experience and I definitely gave him a firm handshake before tip-off, but I certainly wish Corban and my father-in-law the best for the rest of the season."

NCU will be back in action next Saturday, hosting Linfield College at 7:30 pm.
