Concordia vs. British Columbia Recap
Trailing 5-1 in the eighth, Concordia rallied for six runs in the home half of the inning to defeat British Columbia 7-5 in a neutral game held at Lewis-Clark State on Saturday.
Batting 10 in the pivotal inning, the Cavs got on base in a variety of ways to take the lead.
Cole Buruse led off the inning with a double down the left-field line and was followed by an error at short to allow pinch hitter Corbin Henderson to reach and Buruse to score to make it a 5-2 game.
Jimmy Sanchez singled down the line and Blake Drake reached on a bunt single just in front of the catcher to load the bases. From there, Jordan Keeker made it a 5-3 gap with a fielders’ choice to second which scored Henderson and provoked a pitching change for UBC.
Now facing the reliever that shut the Cavaliers down in the ninth the day before in Miles Verweel, Carl Beckert turned on a single through the right to score Sanchez and cut the deficit to a single run.
Next to the plate, Cole Shidaki reached first to reload the bases after being hit by pitch which set up Christian Lichtenthaler’s game-tying single to the left side. In yet another way of reaching safely, C.J. Watson drew a walk for an RBI and the go-ahead score at 6-5. Finally capping the rally, Lichtenthaler found a clear path home from third on a wild pitch during Henderson’s at bat versus UBC’s second reliever, Bryan Pawlina.
UBC starter Alex Graham lasted 7.1 innings and allowed five runs, three of which were earned, on seven hits. CU starter Jon Yearout out in six innings of work and gave up three runs, only one of which were earned, on eight hits.
CU’s Gage Aker picked up the win despite allowing two runs on three hits in the eighth inning while Christian Bannister, in his CU debut, pitched a perfect ninth for the save.
UBC finished with a 12 to 9 edge in hits but committed three errors in the field compared to one for the Cavaliers.
