Third Time is a Charm for CU's Moore in Idaho High Jump
COMPLETE RESULTS
MOSCOW, Idaho—Clearing his third and final attempt to win the high jump at the Idaho Collegiate on Friday, Concordia’s Ethan Moore earned three more attempts at the next height where he went on to earn an NAIA automatic qualifying mark with a successful leap at 6-8 1/4.
Moore was the lone jumper to soar over the bar at 6-7 which secured the meet win, but the real prize occurred at the next height with the NAIA ‘A’ standard on the line. Similar to the previous series, Moore went on to clear the new height on his third and final attempt to punch his ticket to the national championships.
Moore had previously recorded an NAIA provisional qualifier with a 6-8 (2.03m) make at the University of Husky Classic. His new indoor best remains just .01 off the school mark of 6-8 3/4 shared by Matt Waters and Marcus Cooper.
Demetrius Rhodes posted CU’s only additional NAIA qualifier in Idaho with a 1:56.53 turn in the 800-meter run. Rhodes shaved nearly a full second off his season best in the event for a fourth-place finish while barely crossing below the 1:56.65 ‘B’ barrier.
Two Cavalier sprinters combined to win three events with NyEma Sims tackling the women’s field in the 60- and 200-meter dashes while Andre Washington won the men’s 400-meter run.
Cruising to a 49.49, Washington finished shy of his school record run of 49.13 but handled the 15-racer field by .56 as Eastern Washington’s Kramer Green came in second overall with a 49.95. Nearly cracking the 50-second plateau, CU’s Joshua Bland placed third overall with a season best of 50.14.
Sims, meanwhile, dominated the short sprints with a 7.50 in the 60 and a 24.68 in the 200. In addition, Catherine Sims took fourth place in both events with an 8.06 (a career best 7.95 in the prelims) in the 60 and a 25.50 in the 200.
In the men’s sprints, Eric Tolento flirted with a school record and a career best with a 7.12 in the preliminary round. The No. 2-ranked 60 runner in school history, Tolento’s time was .01 off a career best and .08 off the all-time CU best of 7.04 set by Jameson Futter during the 2012 season.
In the 200, Torento cut .32 off his all-time indoor best with a 22.90, moving Tolento up three spots to No. 3 all-time at Concordia. Fellow Cavalier DeAndre Jackson DeAndre Jackson battered his former indoor career best of 23.45 with a 23.09 on Friday.
