PORTLAND, Ore.—Concordia junior guard Kelly Huey has been selected as the 2012 California Community College Athletic Association Female Scholar Athlete of the Year.
The award represents the highest honor the CCCAA, an association with more than 27,000 participants annually, gives out to an individual student-athlete.
“We are very excited for Kelly to receive this honor,” said CU head coach Aaron Christian. “There are very few that even have a chance to be considered for an award like this.”
Huey earned the honor after playing the first two seasons of her collegiate career at Skyline College in the San Francisco Bay Area. Huey accumulated a 4.0 GPA at Skyline while pursuing a degree in nursing.
Huey has continued her pursuit of a nursing degree in the nursing program at Concordia where she has also excelled on the CU women’s basketball team.
“Kelly has been an awesome addition to our school and basketball program,” said Christian. “Besides her contributions on the court, she is an outstanding person and student. She balances a busy schedule from carrying a 4.0 GPA throughout college and majoring in nursing all while being a student athlete, which speaks volumes about the person she is.”
On the basketball this season, Huey’s all-around game has been a blessing for the Cavs as she averages 11.1 points per game, 5.9 rebounds per game, 4.5 assists per game and 1.75 steals per game. In addition, Huey has scored 10 or more points in 12 of the Cavs’ last 14 games.
Huey’s average of 4.5 assists per game also rank her third in the CCC, 16th in NAIA Division II and would rank as the eighth-best single-season average in school history if the season ended today.
Huey will receive the CCCAA Female Scholar Athlete Award as part of the 2013 CCCAA Celebration of Student Athletes Luncheon in San Mateo, Calif. on Wednesday, March 27.
