Eagle Trio Named NU Athletes of the Year
KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest University announced Michael Greene of Bellingham, Wash., has been voted the Male Athlete of the Year for 2012-13 and Heather Shulke of Castle Rock, Wash., and Stephanie Cummins of Renton, Wash., have been named co-Female Athletes of the Year for 2012-13. All three will be honored on Friday night at the annual Hall of Fame Benefit held at the Bellevue Hyatt Regency Hotel.
Greene. A 6-5 junior was a first team, All-Cascade Conference team member and earned Honorable Mention status on the 2013 NAIA All-American team. Greene was the team leader in scoring, assists, rebounds and steals this season as he helped lead the Eagles to a 22-10 record and a third straight appearance in the NAIA national championships. He was also a 3-time Cascade Conference player of the week this season. An outstanding student, Greene was named a CCC Scholar-Athlete, CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) First Team, District 8 Scholar Athlete, CoSIDA First Team Academic All-American and a NAIA Scholar Athlete in 2012-13. Greene also broke the 1,000 career point barrier this past season and now has 1,098 points in his three years on the Eagle team.
Shulke, a senior libero on the Eagle volleyball team, is a two-time All-Cascade Conference First Team member as she finished the year ranked #2 in the CCC in digs with 414 (557 season digs) and a 6.27 d/ps average. She was ranked #7 in NAIA Division I in digs per set. Heather broke the long standing NU record for career digs as she ends her three year career at Northwest with 1,612. She is also #1 in digs per set at NU with a 5.8 d/ps average. Added to her 399 digs she had at Palm Beach Atlantic prior to transferring to NU, Shulke totals 2,011 career digs. Also an outstanding student, she was also named a CCC Scholar Athlete and a Daktronics NAIA Scholar Athlete.
Senior Stephanie Cummins was named to the First team, All-CCC team for the second straight year in 2012 and was voted 2012 CCC co-Defensive Player of the Year. Cummins helped lead her Northwest University teammates to a CCC regular-season championship with seven wins and 22 points (9-9-2, 7-1-1 CCC). She was earned third team NAIA All-American honors. Cummins finished the season pacing an Eagle defense that allowed just seven goals in conference play. Cummins also contributed offensively to the NU offense with four goals, of which two were game-winners.
