Oregon Tech Earns NAIA West Sweep over Corban, 11-10 & 12-6
KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Ryan Hayden came up with the game-winning single in the 10
th inning of game 1 to help Oregon Tech to an 11-10 win over Corban University, while Talon Sisley scattered eight hits in the nightcap, as the Owls swept the Warriors after a 12-6 win in the finale in NAIA West baseball action today at Kiger Stadium.
Oregon Tech takes an 11-20 overall mark into a non-conference doubleheader versus Willamette University at Kiger Stadium on Tuesday. The Owls sit at 4-8 in the NAIA West standings. Corban, meanwhile, is 16-12 on the season and 5-7 in league play.
Tech notched a pair of runs in the opening inning, and again in the third, to post a 4-3 lead over the Warriors. The Owls would outscore CU 6-1 to take a comfortable 10-4 advantage through six innings of play before the visitors mounted their comeback.
Corban pushed across four runs in the seventh to make it 10-8 and two more in the ninth inning to send the opener into extra innings. Back-to-back singles and a hit batter loaded the bases for CU in the seventh with Derek Legg and Peter Martin driving in two runs each. In the ninth Marc Gallegos opened with a single and with one out Legg doubled to put runners on second and third. A Nate Williams sacrifice fly made it 10-9 while a Martin single knotted the game at 10-10. Tech’s Darian Brenanua was called upon to record Tech’s last out.
After Brenanua put CU down in order in the 10
th inning, the Owls, with one out, would load the bases for Hayden’s heroics. Rogers and Kevin Shulemson singled, while Ethan Schlecht earned a walk. Hayden, on his third pitch he saw, drove a line drive into the gap in left center field to lift the Owls to the 11-10 victory.
For the Owls in game 1 Spencer Reed, Dylan Rogers and Ryan Hayden finished with three hits each with Rogers and Hayden driving in two runs and Reed one in the win. Aaron Bocchi added two hits and two RBI. Brenanua retired the only four batters he faced and moved to 2-1 after earning the win on the mound for the Owls.
For CU in the opener Gallegos and Martin came up with three hits each with Legg adding two doubles and Williams a triple and RBI. Jordan Johansen moved to 1-1 after recording the loss on the hill for the Warriors.
Game 2 – Oregon Tech’s Aaron Bocchi blasted a 3-run homerun in the Owls’ first at-bat and tacked on four more in the second frame, as the home team ran out to a 7-4 lead and never looked back. Tech held on to a three run cushion, 8-5, before scoring two runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings while seeing CU score a run in their final at-bat for the final 12-6 margin.
Tech starter Talon Sisley never gave up a big inning, allowing single runs in five of his eight innings on the mound. Sisley moved to 2-3 on the season, allowing eight hits and five strikeouts in 8.0 innings. Brenanua tossed the final inning allowing the Warriors a run in the ninth.
Jared Nelson finished with three hits and scored three runs with Bocchi driving in three runs on his homerun in the first inning. Alex Reynolds, Schlecht and Hayden added two hits each with Schlecht, Hayden and Rogers driving in two runs apiece in the game 2 win.
For the Warriors in game 2, Williams and Legg recorded two hits with Williams and Kyle Kunkel driving in two runs and Legg one in the loss. Warrior starting pitcher Justin White took the loss and is now even at 3-3 on the year.
