Cavs Win 11 Events at Spring Break Invite

PORTLAND, Ore.—NyEma Sims tackled the school record in the 200-meter dash while Willy Irwin duplicated the feat in eth shot put as the Concordia track & field team captured 11 titles at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open on Saturday.
On the track, Sims broke the line in 23.85 to destroy her former school record of 24.21 in the half-lapper. Sims won the event handedly over unattached competitor Karene King’s 24.44. The NAIA automatic qualifying mark puts Sims at No. 2 on the NAIA performance list.
Earning a second ‘A’ standard performance in the 100, Sims nearly posted a second school record by finishing with an 11.78, just .01 off her all-time CU mark which was set at the 2012 NAIA national championships.
Over at the shot put ring, NAIA Indoor national champion Willy Irwin regained his national lead in the event after briefly being overcome by Northwood University’s Alex Adams. Irwin entered the day with a season best of 60-0 1/4 (18.29m), before Adams eked ahead with a 60-3 3/4 (18.38m) toss in action down in Texas on Saturday.
Irwin was able to pop a 61-2 1/4 (18.65m) to not only take the lead back but add almost a full foot of separation over his rival while breaking the former outdoor school record of 60-7 1/4 (18.47m) set by 2012 national champion Eric Whalen.
Irwin was a double winner on Saturday with a victory in the discus with a season best mark of 179-10 (54.81m). The distance added more than eight feet to his NAIA-leading performance.
In the women’s throws, Gabriella Dixson won a pair of events with a 47-0 3/4 (14.34m) in the shot put and a season-best 156-6 (47.71m) in the discus. Sharayah Kenandy gave the Cavaliers three wins in the throwing disciplines with a 194-8 (59.33m) in the hammer. Dixson placed second in the event with a 171-11 (52.40m).
Bo Johnson and Adam Riddle, meanwhile, went 1-2 in the men’s hammer with marks of 192-10 (58.79m) and 181-10 (55.43m), respectively.
The final two event champions came from Andre Washington in the 400-meter dash and Linsie Michels in the 1,500-meter run. Washington toured the oval in 49.09 for first place while teammate Joshua Bland also broke the 50-second barrier with a 49.87 for third place.
Michels defeated the field in eth 1,500 with an NAIA ‘A’ qualifier of 4:37.90. Taking runner-up honors, Sarah Whybark narrowly missed the ‘B’ standard of 4:42.50 with a time of 4:42.56.
