Cavs Defeat Trio of Ranked Teams at the Battle at Primm

PRIMM VALLEY, Nev.—Despite finishing in eighth place out of 17 teams, the unranked Concordia University men’s golf team finished ahead of three ranked teams among the elite field competing at the Battle at Primm on Tuesday.
Concordia (288-293-295—876) held off No. 9 British Columbia (290-291-297—878) by two strokes while easily outpacing No. 15 Embry-Riddle (296-299-301—896) and No. 25-ranked Mount Mercy (287-300-3120—899). In addition, the Cavaliers finished the two-day event just four strokes back of No. 13-ranked Wayland Baptist (281-290-301—872) and No. 5-ranked Bellevue (285-289-299—873).
In an upset at the top of the leaderboard, No. 19-ranked Grand View (284-284-280—848), the host institution travelling from Iowa, finished 16 strokes under par to defeat No. 4-ranked California State San Marcos (282-288-284—854) by six strokes for the team title.
Florida’s Johnson & Wales (281-289-290—860), ranked No. 7 in the latest coaches’ poll, finished ahead of No. 2-ranked Oklahoma City (288-283-291—862) for fourth place.
Overall, the field featured 10 ranked teams and five others that received votes in the poll for 15 of the 41 schools nationwide that collected at least one vote in the latest edition of the NAIA rankings.
Individually, OKC’s Anthony Marchesani (66-67-72—205) earned medalist honors after surviving a late push by CSU San Marcos’ Ryan Odon (69-70-68—207).
Compiling a consistent three rounds of play to crack the top 10, Cody Johnson (72-72-71—215) finished one stroke under par to tie for ninth overall out of 90 golfers to lead Concordia.
Tied with Johnson through 36 holes, Tanner Maahs (70-74-74—218) posted back-to-back 74s to end the tournament two strokes above par and tied for 20th place. Kolton Kyne (72-74-76—22) and Jed Dalton (74-73-75—222) shared 35th place with two other individuals while Jess Wingett (75-76-76—226) finished four strokes back of the Cavalier duo.
