COMPLETE RESULTS

PRIMM VALLEY, Nev.—
Behind top-10 performances from Sunny Powers and Jennifer Gibbons, the Concordia University women’s golf team finished in fifth place at the Battle of Primm on Tuesday.

Concordia (324-323—647) managed to cut a single stroke from its opening round score with a 323, but could not close the gap on the four ranked teams that finished ahead of the Cavaliers.

Despite posting a higher score in the second round of play, No. 3-ranked California State San Marcos (308-310—618) jumped from sharing third place to the tournament champion, edging No. 11-ranked Wayland Baptist (301-318—619) by one swing.

British Columbia (305-371—622), ranked No. 5 in the latest coaches’ poll, settled for third place after defeating fellow Canadian school the University of Victoria (308-316—624) by two strokes.

Following unranked Concordia were: Iowa’s Grand View (340-333—673), Utah’s Westminster (342-333—675) and Arizona’s Embry-Riddle (362-348—710). Victoria came into the tournament ranked No. 12 in the NAIA while Grand View and Westminster received votes in the poll but fell shy of the top 25.

Posting a 4-under 68 on Monday, Wayland Baptist’s Morgan Matchett (68-74—142) finished two strokes below par for 36 holes to win the tourney crown by five over UVIK’s Megan Woodland (72-75—147). Concordia’s Sunny Powers (76-75—151) defeated UBC’s Kylie Barros (76-76—152) by one stroke for third place.

Also cracking the  top 10 for the Cavaliers, Jennifer Gibbons (79-76—155) reduced her tally by three strokes on her second go-around to end the event in ninth place out of 46 individuals.

In addition to Powers and Gibbon, Holly Winburn (86-83—169) and Patricia Little (90-89—179) also came back with lower second-day scores. Winburn finished in 28th place while Little finished in 36th place, sandwiching 30th-place finisher Madison Alamillo (83-89—172).

Concordia will return to action April 1-2 when it hosts the Cavalier Classic in Portland, Ore. The first 36 holes of the tournament will be played at Columbia Edgewater on Monday before finishing up with 18 holes at Heron Lakes Greenback on Tuesday.
