SOU Earns Two Titles and Nine NAIA Qualifiers at SFSU Distance Carnival

MEET RESULTS

SAN FRANCISCO –
 Southern Oregon distance runners totaled two event victories, one meet record, nine NAIA national qualifying marks and 18 Cascade Collegiate Conference qualifiers Friday at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival.

Eric Avila and Zach Boyd-Helm each hit NAIA ‘A’ standard qualifiers while finishing first in their events as Avila won the 5000 and Boyd-Helm won the 800-meter race. Avila’s time of 14:03.14 is the second-best time in the NAIA this season and established a new meet record for the San Francisco Distance Carnival. Boyd-Helm’s time of 1:51.16 tops the NAIA marks midway through the 2013 outdoor season.

Kevin Jorgensen placed third in the 1500, tallying a time of 3:52.11. His time is the third-best in the NAIA this season and automatically qualifies him for the NAIA national meet.

Alexandra Rudd posted a personal-best time of 37:02.78 in the women’s 10,000-meter race to hit an automatic qualifying mark and rank fifth in the NAIA this season. She finished sixth in the event on Friday. Summer Cano and Anne Hagy both surpassed the NAIA ‘B’ provisional qualifying mark with times of 37:33.51 and 37:36.38, respectively.

Jessie Rozario placed 12th in the women’s steeplechase with an NAIA ‘B’ qualifying time of 11:28.31. Jared Hixon hit the ‘B’ mark in the men’s 5000 with a time of 14:50.67, and Hector Aleman hit the ‘B’ mark in the 10,000 with a time of 31:06.25.

Nine other SOU student-athletes joined the national qualifiers in posted CCC-qualifying marks on Friday. Rebecca Lupescu qualified for the conference meet in the 5000, while Chase Bussing qualified in the men’s 800 and Trevor Lynn and Tyler VanDyke both qualified in the men’s 5000. Eric Ghelfi, Brett Hornig, Will Parke-Hoffman and Cody Carter joined Aleman to give SOU five conference qualifiers in the 10,000, and Cary Dunagan qualified in the men’s steeplechase.

Southern Oregon returns to action April 6 with its shortest trip of the season, as the Raiders will travel to Klamath Falls for the 2013 Border Duel.
