COMPLETE RESULTS

MONMOUTH, Ore.—
Competing at a local meet before heading to California next week, the Concordia men’s and women’s track & field teams combined to win nine events at the John Knight Twilight held at Western Oregon University on Friday.

In addition to the meet wins, Concordia’s Linsie Michels added an NAIA automatic qualifier in the 800 while Willy Irwin improved upon his season best ‘A’ standard in the discus.

“The weather wasn’t very cooperative for the running events but we still have a number of high quality performances,” CU head coach Isaac Frederick said. “The results really speak for themselves, as the winning performances were pretty solid for the conditions.”

Concordia will turn their attention south as the team will travel to compete in a trio of meets, including the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays, in the Los Angeles area next weekend.

At WOU, Michels and Mikel Elliott highlighted action on the track for the Cavs as Michels toured two laps of the track in 2:13.03 for a four-second win over Mt. Hood C.C.’s Christa Collmer (2:17.92). The mark fell just under the NAIA ‘A’ barrier of 2:14.50 which gives Michels automatic entry in her second event after racing to a 4:29.09 in the 1,500 earlier this season.

Elliott, meanwhile, nearly gave the Cavs a second qualifier in the 1,500 with a winning time of 4:43.09, just off the NAIA ‘A’ standard of 4:40.10. Sarah Whybark finished in sixth place with a 4:47.62 while freshman Megan VonBargen set a season best with a 5:04.82.

The Cavaliers also recorded win in the men’s 400-meter hurdles and the men’s 400 relay. Jordan Reeher missed out on a season best in the 400 hurdles, but managed to control the field with a 54.62 while the relay quartet consisting of Reeher, Timmy Rodriguez, Andre Washington and Ethan Moore and covered the oval in 42.64 to take gold.

Moore’s relay duties gave the senior three wins on the day after first-place finishes in the high jump (6-6) and the long jump (22-1 1/2).

For the second straight week, Willy Irwin collected a stadium record in the shot put. The NAIA national leader in the event with a 62-8 (19.10m) effort to his credit, Irwin nearly matched his season best which shattered the stadium record at Willamette University with a 62-6 (19.05m) at McArthur Field on Friday.

Irwin, did however add to his season best in the discus by almost eight feet with a 188-8 (57.46m) toss. The distance remains the No. 2 mark in the NAIA behind Doane’s (Neb.) Zack Lindsley (193-2).

Gabriella Dixson, already the NAIA leader in the discus, will likely move into the No. 1 spot in the shot put with a season-best toss of 49-7 3/4. Dixson entered the week ranked second behind Hasting’s (Neb.) Jennifer Maag (48-11 1/2). Maag, in addition to the rest of the top five NAIA shot putters, will be in action on Saturday either at the Sioux City (Iowa) Relays or at the Concordia (Neb.) Outdoor Invite.

“Willy continues to dominate the NAIA shot put while Gabi had another solid well-rounded performance in the throwing events,” Frederick said.
Bo Johnson, yet another Cavalier with a No. 1 NAIA ranking in his respective event, captured CU’s final event win on Friday with a 188-8 in the hammer throw. The distance fell just shy of his 193-5 season best from Wildcat Open on March 16.
