The Master's College Wins CCC Champs/NAIA Unaffiliated Qualifer; WPC's Andrew Johnson Finishes as Top Individual
TOURNAMENT RESULTS
MONROE, Ore.—No. 11 The Master’s College shot a 6-over par 294 in the third and final round of the CCC Championships/NAIA Unaffiliated Qualifer at Diamond Woods Golf Course on Tuesday, giving them the tournament title by 18 strokes over Warner Pacific.
The tournament title gives The Master’s College an automatic berth into the NAIA National Tournament, the seventh time in school history the school will play in the national tournament.
Warner Pacific had shared the lead with The Master’s College going into the final round, but fell to second after shooting a 312 in the third round as a team. The Master’s College finished the tournament with a three-round total of 913 (314-305-294), while Warner Pacific finished at 931 (306-313-312).
The Knights did finish as the top CCC team at the tournament, though, as they finished two strokes ahead of third-place Concordia at 933 (311-314-308). The CCC tournament win was the second of the season for the Knights after the team won its home tournament back on Oct. 15.
The Knights’ Andrew Johnson also took home medalist honors after shooting an even-par 72 in the final round Tuesday to finish at 3-over par (70-77-72—219) for the tournament. Johnson led the tournament from the first round on, and closed out a four-stroke victory over Corban’s Jared Lambert (74-74-75—223) with his play on Tuesday.
Johnson’s performance also won him the CCC Player of the Year award, which goes to the individual with the lowest scoring average in conference tournaments throughout the season. Johnson entered the tournament five strokes back of Northwest Christian’s Tyler Fallk, but took the lead by one stroke after Monday, then won the chase with his play on Tuesday.
Falk shot a 1-over par 73 Tuesday to finish just two strokes back of Johnson in the chase, the closest finish for the CCC Player of the Year award in conference history. In besting Falk, who won the CCC Player of the Year award following the 2010-11 season, Johnson becomes the first Warner Pacific men’s golfer to ever earn the award since the conference adopted the sport for the 2007-08 season.
Warner Pacific also becomes the first team other then Concordia to win the CCC Tournament, though the Cavaliers still won their sixth straight CCC championship Tuesday. The conference title goes to the team with the lowest scoring average in the five CCC tournaments throughout the season, which the Cavaliers had by 89 strokes over Warner Pacific.
The Master’s College, however, took home its fourth regional championship in school history Tuesday. Nobody on The Maser’s College shot worse than a 76 Tuesday, while Thane Ringler led the team in the tournament overall, finishing tied for third with a three-round total of 226 (79-74-73). Andrew Bergoon, meanwhile, led the team on Tuesday, shooting an even-par 72 to finish sixth overall with a three-round total of 228 (81-75-72). Behind him, Michael Reitz finished tied for eighth overall at 230 (78-78-74), while John Lawson (76-83-76) and Nolan Sand (82-78-75) each finished tied for 13th at 235.
The Master’s College’s hot final round put them above Warner Pacific, which finished second at the tournament. The Knights’ A.J. Nelson finished second on the team, behind Johnson, and 10th overall at 231 (78-75-78) for the tournament. Besides him, John-Michael Pilot finished tied for 17th at 238 (79-79-80), Michael Salisbury finished 26th at 243 (79-82-82) and Zach Cummings finished 37th at 265 (84-91-90).
Jess Wingett, meanwhile, led the third-place Cavaliers at the tournament, finishing seventh overall at 229 (75-77-77). Tanner Maahs led the Cavs in the final round, shooting a 3-over par 75 to finish 12th overall at 233 (76-82-75). Besides him, senior Jed Dalton finished tied for 15th at 236 (78-80-78), Josh Vizcaino finished 20th at 239 (82-79-78) and Kolton Kyne finished tied for 21st at 240 (82-78-80).
Besides the top three teams, Arizona Christian finished fourth at 944 (326-310-308), Corban finished fifth at 950 (319-315-316), Biola finished sixth at 960 (329-319-312), Northwest Christian finished seventh at 961 (324-323-314) and The College of Idaho finished eighth at 978 (334-320-324).
The tournament also settled the All-CCC first team, which comprises of the top seven golfers in the CCC based on scoring average in the five conference tournaments. Now will all five tournaments complete, Johnon, Falk, Dalton, Lambert, The College of Idaho’s Kyle DeLorey, Wingett and Kyne finished as the top seven in the conference.
In addition, Warner Pacific head coach Quincy Heard was named the CCC Men's Coach of the Year after leading the Knights to the CCC Tournament Championship.
