Taylor Copher hit two home runs in the second game with Northwest U.
Long Ball Powers Concordia Over Northwest in Game Two
KIRKLAND, Wash. – Powered by five home runs, Concordia held on to an early lead for an 8-4 victory over Northwest University in the second game of today’s CCC doubleheader halted 3 hours by a rain delay. After Concordia defeated Northwest 7-3 in the opener, a brief thunder storm soaked the field, but play was able to resume after sunny skies prevailed the remainder of the day.
Taylor Copher put the Cavaliers ahead in the top of the first inning with a 2 run blast to left center driving in Tobey Varney for a 2-0 lead. Jennifer Lutton then led off the top of the 2nd inning with a solo shot and, after Tobey Varney grounded out, Katie Aden hit a solo home run to center field to put CU up 4-0. Copher hit her second home run of the day as she led off the 3rd inning with another solo home run to left center field for a 5-0 Cavalier lead. After a Tobey Varney walk and a double by Katie Aden, Katie Santos hit a 3 run round tripper to left field increasing the CU lead to 8-0.
Northwest catcher, Lynzee Halcott led off the bottom of the 4th inning with her fourth home run of the season to close the gap to 8-1. The Eagles got a rally going in the bottom of the 7th when Ricki Tacdol singled scoring Lynzee Halcott, Holly Entus and Lauren Robinson with two out, but Vanessa Ahrendt flied out to center field to end the run and the game.
Concordia (31-14, 16-4 CCC) had 13 hits for the game led by Cassidy Horner’s 3 hits in 4 at bats. Katie Aden went 2 for 2 with an RBI with Taylor Copher and Mary Luger going 2 for 4. Danielle Orvella got the win for the Cavs going the distance and giving up 9 hits and 4 runs.
Northwest U. (7-27, 4-16 CCC) was led by Ricki Tacdol’s 2 for 3 day with 3 RBI’s while Lauren Robinson and Holly Entus went 2 for 4 for the Eagles.
“Concordia showed why they’ve won 31 games this season,” commented NU head coach, John Bacon, “but I was proud of our young team and the way they never quit, got 9 hits and rallied for 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning. They are continuing to gain valuable experience for the future as they strive to improve.”
Game 1: Concordia's lead off batter, Tobey Varney, opened the game with a solo home run over the left field fence to give the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead. CU got their second and third run as Laura Luther and Taylor Copher scored after a Mary Luger singled to left center and scored two more as Robin Gawlista hit a bases loaded single to right center.
Katy Aden knocked in two more runs in the top of the 3rd with her single and an NU error as McKenzie Marshall as Mary Luger crossed home plate. Northwest scored in the bottom of the inning when Lauren Robinson's single drove in Ashley Curtis.
Northwest (4-15, 7-26) would score one more in the bottom of the 4th when Lynzee Halcott led off with a home run and bottom of the 7th with Lauren Robinson's round tripper as Concordia (30-14, 15-4 CCC) would hold on for the victory. McKenzie Marshall earned the win giving up 7 hits, 3 runs and striking out 8 Eagle batters. Kelli Peckham takes the loss for Northwest U.
Lauren Robinson led Northwest U. going 3 for 4 and knocking in a RBI along with a solo home run. Concordia's McKenzie Marshall earned the win as she gave up 7 hits, 3 runs and struck out 8 NU batters in 7 innings of pitching.
