La Grande, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University softball team (14-29, 5-21 CCC) fell short to Concordia University (33-14, 18-4 CCC) this afternoon 1-4 and 1-4.
In the first game, the Cavaliers would score first at the top of the second inning. With two runners on, Concordia’s Robin Gawlista would single to first base scoring teammate Mary Lugar. Jennifer Lutton then scored off of an Eastern leaving the score 0-2.
The Mountaineers would hold the Cavaliers and answer back in the bottom of the sixth. Katie Martell stepped up to bat first and fouled off three balls before hitting a homerun over left center. Martell would be the only one to score as Concordia tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh, ending the game 1-4.
In the second game, Concordia scored first again off of a Katie Aden single homerun in the first inning. Teammate Cassidy Horner then hit a double up the middle scoring Kate Santos giving the Cavaliers a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the first inning. Eastern only let up two more runs in the second and seventh inning, going into the bottom of the seventh scoreless.
Eastern’s Sarah Jackson stepped up to the plate and hit a double to right center. Teammates Alex Hillmick and Gracie Flyg would both fly out to the outfield as they tried to advance Jackson. With two outs, Stephanie Maestretti would give the Mountaineers hope hitting a double to left center and scoring Jackson closing the gap to 1-4. Maestretti then took advantage of a throwing error by Concordia and advanced to third. With a runner in scoring position, Georgie Kelly hit a hard ground ball towards second base to try and score her teammate. Unfortunately the Cavaliers’ defense was too much as they threw Kelly out at first base before Maestretti could cross the plate.
