PORTLAND, Ore.—The Concordia volleyball program has signed three new players to its 2013 signing class, head coach Melanie Hambelton announced on Monday.

Brenna Huwe, Kyley Klem and Taylor Sonnenberg make up the three-member batch of new signees, with all three players coming to the Cavs straight out of high school.

Huwe comes to the Cavs out of Reynolds High School in Troutdale, Ore., where she was a versatile player for her high school team. Huwe saw time at setter, left and right side hitter and all back row positions while at Reynolds. Huwe handled the shuffling well, though, as she was a three-time all-conference hitter at Reynolds, and was named an Athlete of the Month during all four years of her career. Huwe’s team also made the state tournament all four years, with the last three appearances coming with her as captain.

“I’m really excited for the versatility that Brenna will bring to our program,” Hambelton said. “Brenna is extremely talented and will challenge for court time this year. She’s quick, jumps well and is a steady player who has received excellent coaching in high school as well as club.”

Klem, meanwhile, comes to the Cavs out of Santa Margarita Catholic High School in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. Klem played as a middle blocker and a right-side hitter while at Santa Margarita, and led the team to three straight Trinity League Championships from 2009-11. Klem also played for the Saddleback Volleyball Club in Lake Forest, Calif. for five years.

“Kyley will give us some great depth and options in the front row next season,” Hambelton said. “She’s quick off the ground in attacking the middle and is able to effectively read the setter and put up a good block.”

Finally, Sonnenberg comes to the Cavs out of Moses Lake High School in Moses Lake, Wash., where she played all four years as a libero for her high school team. Sonnenberg was named a first-team all-league libero as a senior in 2012 after being named a second-team all-league libero as a junior.

“Taylor is so excited to become a Cavalier and actually committed in the fall of 2012,” Hambelton said. “She’s an outstanding defensive specialist who is quick to the ball and has great reading ability and instincts. She will provide depth to our program and will make our defense even stronger.”

Together, the three signees join transfer Jenessa Taylor to give the Cavs four members in their 2013 recruiting class so far.
