Raiders and Coyotes Split Softball Doubleheader

ASHLAND – Southern Oregon and College of Idaho split a pair of pitching duels Friday afternoon, with the visiting Coyotes claiming the opener by a 3-1 score before the Raiders finished the day with a 2-0 victory in Cascade Collegiate Conference softball action at University Field.
Southern Oregon’s record goes to 13-14 overall and 9-5 in conference play, while College of Idaho goes to 20-18 overall and 6-8 in the CCC. Both teams return to action Saturday, as the Raiders will host Eastern Oregon and C of I will travel to Klamath Falls for a doubleheader against Oregon Tech beginning at 11:00 a.m.
Sydney White pitched both games for Southern Oregon, dropping the opener despite limiting the Coyotes to one earned run on two hits before claiming the two-hit shutout victory in the second game. Nickayla Skinner picked up the complete-game win for the Yotes in the opener and Cortni Pena took the loss in the second game.
Sierra Anderson and Jessica Flores each tallied a pair of hits in the opener and finished with three for the doubleheader, while Stephanie Vandenbusch went 2-for-3 in the opener. Rachael Strong and Ashley Van Horne each picked up a hit in each game for College of Idaho, with Strong hitting a homer.
The Coyotes scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning and added one more in the fifth of the opener. Julia Henrie reach base on an SOU error and scored when Strong cranked a home run to left center. Southern Oregon used three hits in the bottom of the frame to pick up its lone run of the game. Vandenbusch and Anderson singled to start the inning, and Vandenbusch came in to score on a Flores single through the left side. College of Idaho took advantage of a walk, stolen base and throwing error in the top of the fifth to make it 3-1, and neither team scored the rest of the way.
The second game featured only six hits and two runs. Southern Oregon scored both in the bottom of the third, with a pair of College of Idaho errors leading to the unearned runs. Lauren Keel walked and advanced to second on a throwing error that put Kara Kelsey on first. Gonzalez drove home Keel with a single up the middle, and Kelsey scored on the Yotes’ second error of the inning.
