SOU Men, College of Idaho Women Win CCC Track Team Titles

GRESHAM, Ore. – The 2013 Cascade Collegiate Conference Track & Field Championships concluded today at Earl Klapstein Stadium on the campus of Mt. Hood Community College.

The Southern Oregon University men unseated seven-time champion Concordia to earn the team championship. The Raiders used strong performances in sprints, distance, and field events to score 217 points. Eastern Oregon finished second at 145 points, followed by Concordia (131), and upstart Corban (99).

A new team champion emerged on the women’s side as well, as The College of Idaho broke a string of six straight championships by Concordia. Behind eight individual champions, the Yotes racked up 210.5 points. Eastern Oregon finished in the runner-up spot with 126.5 points, while Concordia came home in third (115).

After two more records were broken today, a total of seven meet records fell during a weekend of outstanding competition.

The day began with another 1-2 finish from Concordia in a throwing event. This time it was Gabriella Dixson (45-08.50) and Johna McEllrath (42-11.00) taking the top two spots in the shot put.

Willy Irwin and Zach Lake gave Concordia yet another 1-2 finish in a throwing event, this time in the men’s shot put. Irwin’s heave of 62-03.75 is a new meet record and well ahead of his teammate at 48-11.50.

Luke Fischer uncorked a javelin toss of 213-08 to give the Northwest men’s team an individual champion. The mark is easily a NAIA automatic qualifying distance. EOU’s Francisco Saldana Lara placed second at 179-09.

EOU’s Brooke Randall scored the title in the women’s javelin. Her mark of 145-09 was a NAIA automatic qualifying time and more than two feet better than second place Joelle Swanson from Oregon Tech (143-02).

SOU’s Stephanie Techler won the women’s pole vault event by clearing the bar at 11-05.75. She was followed by OIT’s Shannelle Cayetano (10-11.75) and 2012 champion Tiffanie Nyssen from Warner Pacific (10-11.75).

In the men’s pole vault, Jonnie Clark cleared a NAIA provisional height of 15-05.00 to give Warner Pacific their first individual title of the meet. His teammate Nathan Stecker placed second with a height of 14-11.00.

Jasmine Siburt from College of Idaho is the new women’s 100 meter dash champion. Her time of 12.46 edged SOU’s Amelia Maguin at 12.57.

As always, the 100 meters on the men’s side was a thrilling race. Jonz Olander from Southern Oregon sprinted over the track in 10.92 seconds and added to his 400 meter victory from yesterday. His teammate Sullivan Stevens placed second in 10.95, followed by Warner Pacific’s Ka’imi Scott (11.00).

Hillary Holt from College of Idaho also added a second individual win, this one in the 800 meter run. Holt broke the tape in 2:10.99, a NAIA automatic qualifying time and very close to a new meet record. 2012 champion Linsie Michels from Concordia placed second in 2:12.29, while Talissa Baldovino of EOU was third (2:14.05).

In the men’s 800 meters, SOU’s Zach Boyd-Helm outpaced a strong field, winning in 1:51.20 and holding off a challenge from EOU’s Hans Roelle. The top seven finishers in this event earned NAIA automatic qualifying times.      

In the men’s triple jump, Sam Hartinger out-leaped all his foes with a distance of 47-01.50. Keith Lester from Oregon Tech was right behind at 46-08.00.

Hailey Bull grabbed an individual title for College of Idaho by reclaiming her 2011 win in the women’s triple jump. Her leap of 36-07.75 was just ahead of runner-up Eliya Kohl from Corban at 35-11.75.

Mikayla Garrard from Southern Oregon broke through to win the women’s 200 meters after finishing 3rd in 2012. Her time of 25.38 was just ahead of Christi Avery from Warner Pacific at 25.50.

Jonz Olander capped his outstanding meet with the individual title in the 200 meters. The SOU sprinter defended his win from 2012 in the event by crossing the line in 21.73 seconds. Brett Johnson from Corban placed 2nd (21.88) followed by Ka’imi Scott from Warner Pacific (22.06).

Jordan Reeher of Concordia edged 2012 champion Sullivan Stevens from Southern Oregon in the men’s 400 meter hurdles, crossing the line in 53.57. Stevens ran to a time of 53.78, while Ryan Rosenau from Eastern Oregon placed third (55.77).

The women’s 400 meter hurdles saw SOU’s Amelia Maguin earn the victory. Her time of 101.35 is a new meet record, and along with 2nd place Jasmine Siburt from C of I (1:03.98) are NAIA automatic qualifying efforts.  

Karlee Coffee from Eastern Oregon led start to finish in the 5000 meters, winning with a time of 17:02.92. Sora Klopfenstein of College of Idaho crossed the line in 2nd (17:50.95), followed by SOU’s Alexandra Rudd (17:55.51).

A stacked field in the men’s 5000 meters was bested by 2012 defending champion Greg Montgomery from College of Idaho. His time of 14:38.44 was ahead of 2nd place Eric Avila from Southern Oregon and (14:50.12) and steeplechase champion Isaac Updike from EOU.

College of Idaho capped off their dominating women’s team performance with a win in the 4 x 400 relay race in 3:54.09. A strong anchor leg from Hillary Holt allowed the Yotes to hold off a challenge from Eastern Oregon (3:55.18).
 
In the final running event of the day, Concordia scored a victory in the 4 x 400 relay. The Cavs passed the baton to a NAIA provisional and winning time of 3:16.41. The Corban foursome placed 2nd in 3:17.50.

Hillary Holt was named Women’s Track Athlete of the Meet. She dominated the weekend with wins in the 800 meters and 1500 meters. In addition, she was a member of the winning relay teams in 4 x 400 meters.

Women’s Field Athlete of the Meet was Gabriella Dixson from Concordia. Dixson recorded wins in the discus and the shot put, and a second in the hammer throw.

Austin Bastereccheaa from College of Idaho and Willy Irwin from Concordia were voted Co-Field Athletes of the Meet.

Jonz Olander from Southern Oregon was voted Men’s Track Athlete of the Meet thanks to his wins in the 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, and the anchor leg of the 4 x 100 relay team.

Coach of the Year on the women’s side went to College of Idaho's Pat McCurry, while Grier Gatlin from Southern Oregon was voted men’s Coach of the Year.
