PORTLAND, Ore.—With less than one full year at the helm, Concordia second-year head coach Isaac Frederick has announced the signing of 27 student-athletes for the 2013-14 season, representing his first full recruiting class for the Cavaliers.

After stepping into the head coach position in the middle of August, nearing the end of the recruiting cycle last year, Frederick has restocked the Concordia roster with 14 additions to the men's roster and 13 newcomers to the women's roster.

"The student-athletes we have coming in will be immediate impact athletes," Frederick said. "Most should contribute at the conference level immediately and a number of them will be big factors on the national level as well."

"I didn't necessarily focus on event areas specifically as I knew we needed depth in every event group. I tried to identify a few athletes that would have an impact right away in each event group. The javelin and women's distance group needed particular attention."

With 21 career All-American performances, including three national champions in the javelin, Tyler Callahan (Estacada, Ore.), Emma Buchholz (Sheridan, Ore.) and Shayna Wilson (Aberdeen, Wash.) will look to continue the tradition in the event.

Callahan comes to Concordia after recording the No. 1 national mark in the junior college ranks with a career best of 235-0 while Buchholz's career best of 154-8 would rank third at last year's NAIA national championships. Wilson, meanwhile, was runner-up at the 2A Washington State Championships and holds a career best of 133-0.

In the discus, California products Jessica Matos (Corralitas, Calif.) and Terra Steadman (San Jose, Calif.) will seek to add to Concordia's next national champion in the discipline following titles by Annie Hess (2007, 2008, 2009), Kayla Xavier (Modesto, Calif./Johansen H.S.) (2011) and Gabriella Dixson (Battle Ground, Wash./Battle Ground H.S.) (2012, 2013). Among the best throwers on the West Coast last season, Matos fired a season best of 145-4 to earn a No. 9 national ranking among junior college competitors while Steadman launched a 139-9 for a No. 15 ranking.

In the distance events, Brianna and Sean Keene will be expected to make an immediate impact. Sean, a transfer from the University of Kentucky has a career best of 1:50.63 in the 800 while Briana recently captured the Washington High School Class 2A crown and holds a prep best of 2:14.62.

In addition, Eric Alldritt (Bend, Ore.), Brad Prettyman (Estacada, Ore.), Ethan Livermore (Portland, Ore.) and Mark Medgin (Tigard, Ore.) will strengthen the Concordia men's cross country squad. Cia Bywater (Oregon City, Ore.), Randi Chance (Molalla, Ore.), Christa Collmer (Boring, Ore.) will join Keane on the women's side.

Alldritt arrives at CU with after winning a state title in the 3,000 as a junior and came back to place second in the event with a personal record of 8:35.89 as a senior. An NWAACC champion in the steeplechase, Prettyman also held the No. 1 time in the 1,500 by more than four seconds with a 3:52.69 and the top time in the 5,000 with a 15:09.10 while competing for Clackamas C.C. Collmer snared a Southern Region Championship in women's cross country and turned in a season best of 2:18.27 in the 800.

Moving down to the sprints and hurdles, Concordia will add Patrick Contino (Beaverton, Ore.), Eli Kastelein (Langley, B.C.), Carlos Ortiz (Salem, Ore.), Kyle Saulmon (Lebanon, Ore.) and Chris Zeller (Gresham, Ore.). In his first season of running track, Ortiz placed second in the 100-meter dash at the Oregon 6A meet with a 10.82. Zeller was a former NWAACC champion in the 400 champion with a time of 48.40.

The women's sprint and middle-distance crew will be boosted by Samantha Boulanger (Mountain View, Calif.), Molly Scoles (Sedro Wooley, Wash.) and Rachel Siltman (Puyallup, Wash.).

Scoles highlights the group after recording a first-place NWAACC finish in the in the 400 with a 58.55 and posting the top time of the year in the 400-meter hurdles with a 1:03.73.
