Weaver's Golden Goal Lifts NU over Hawks
EL CAJON, Calif. - Northwest University's freshman forward, Jacob Weaver, scored the golden goal in overtime to lift the Eagles over the San Diego Christian College Hawks (RV) this afternoon in a non-conference game. It was a pleasant homecoming for NU head coach Gary McIntosh as he returned to SDC where he played soccer, graduated and began his coaching career.
Weaver's game winner came in the 98th minute as he scored on a breakaway, unassisted to give the Eagles the win. It was Weaver's second goal of the game as his first goal at the 49:10 mark tied the score 2-2 just 51 seconds after SDC's Andrew Robles had given the Hawks the lead.
San Diego Christian took the the early lead just one minute and four seconds into the game as Victor Flores scored unassisted as he put a loose ball in front of the NU goal into the net. Northwest's Todd Siedenburg evened the score at 1-1 in the 20th minute as his shot went off a SDC defender and into the net. Edgar Esquivel earned the assist on the play.
Robles gave SDC the lead at the 48:19 mark when he dribbled through the middle, drew Eagle goalie Joe Galbraith out and scored unassisted and would give the Hawks the short-lived lead before Weaver would tie the score in regulation.
Northwest U. (1-1) outshot SDC 12-8 and had four corner kicks to the Hawks' three. NU goalkeeper, Joe Galbraith, earns the win and had 3 saves on the day. Cameron Riley had 5 saves for San Diego Christian (RV, 0-1). Jacob Weaver (Spokane, Wash.) led the Eagles with 3 shots, all shots on goal.
"We came out again with a lot of energy and pressure which was a good start for us," stated Gary McIntosh, Eagle head coach. "San Diego Christian is well-coached and did a good job on the ball. It was 96 degrees here today and it began to take its toll on us early in the half, but the guys held in there. It was nice to see the guys coming off the bench make a difference for us. Several players stood tall for us today and a key one was Jacob Weaver who scored the tying and game winner coming off the bench. It was great to see a freshman step up that way. Overall, it was a great feeling to come back to the place where I began coaching college soccer and get a win."
The Eagles return to Kirkland and will host Rocky Mountain College next Friday, August 30.
