Concordia Offense Continues Strong Start against OIT
ASHLAND, Ore.—After only scoring five or more goals on two occasions all of last season, the No. 5-ranked Concordia women's soccer team matched the tally in as many games with a 6-0 win against Oregon Tech on Saturday.
Playing another neutral match in Ashland, Concordia (2-0) defeated Holy Names 5-1 on Friday before the six-goal outburst in a rare non-conference tilt against CCC foe OIT, which was competing in their season opener.
Fresh off her first career two-goal performance against HNU, junior Ashley Ames (Liberty Lake, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) got the scoring spree started in the 7th minute of play with an 18-yard strike off a pass from Hannah Kimsey (Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River H.S.). Despite allowing 18 first-half shot, the Owls nearly held onto the one-goal deficit heading into the break but Annika Hayman (Redmond, Wash./Redmond H.S.), another junior, connected for her first career goal with just under three minutes remaining until the break.
Three minutes into the second half, Erin Huisingh (Pasco, Wash./Chiawana H.S.), another two-goal scorer from Friday, notched her third goal of the young season with an assist credited to Hannah Scott (Milwaukie, Ore./Milwaukie H.S.).
The Cavs created another 18 shots in eth second half, finishing with a 36-3 total advantage in that department. Alicia Alarcon and Mackenna Morton (Yakima, Wash./Davis H.S.) added the final two scores for the Cavaliers in the final minute of play. Hayman recorded two assists in the second half to add to her early goal.
Making the start, Nicole Franklin (Hillsboro, Ore./Century H.S.) stopped one shot in goal and picked up the win. Freshman Olivia Brock (Olympia, Wash./Olympia H.S.) started the second half and preserved the team's first shutout of the season. OIT keeper Rebekah Matteri came up with 13 saves on the day while Rebekah Nisbet posted all three of the team's shot attempts, including one on goal in the first half.
Concordia will return to action on August 30 when it hosts No. 18-ranked Westmont College (Calif.) at Tuominen Yard. The Owls are set for their home debut on August 26 when Bethesda (Calif.) makes the trip north to Klamath Falls.
