PORTLAND, Ore. –
The Concordia Volleyball team opened its 2013 season home schedule in dominating fashion Tuesday night, sweeping visiting Simpson University 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-20).

The Cavaliers (3-2) controlled the match offensively, hitting .311 for the match compared to .054 for the visiting Red Hawks (0-2).

Concordia took control of the game late in the first set as they went on a 7-4 run, which included kills by Ashley Jibby (Post Falls, Idaho/Post Falls H.S.), Melanie Miller (Hillsboro, Ore./Liberty H.S.), Lindsay Mangan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina H.S.) and Amanda Goringe (Aloha, Ore./Aloha H.S.), to break the score open at 19-14.

"Going into tonight we wanted to come out strong," said Mangan. "We really wanted to come with everything we had, being that it was our first home game of the season."

The first-set statistics reflected the Cavaliers' dominance as well, with the team recording 18 kills and a .304 hitting percentage in the frame.

The Cavs quickly took control of the second set with a 6-1 lead while a 10-0 run midway through the set pushed CU to a 2-0 lead. Once again, the second-set proved to be in Concordia's favor as the Navy led the attack column with 17 kills and a .400 attacking percentage en route to the 25-12 win.

However, in the third set, the visiting Red Hawks caused the home team to be on their toes as they went up on a quick 7-2 run, earning their first multi-point lead of the game at 9-6. The Cavs fought back to tie the set at 17-17 and put the game and the sweep in their hands as they closed out the set on an 8-3 run.

"I thought that we came out not prepared for the defense that Simpson plays," said head coach Melanie Hambelton. "Simpson chipped a lot of shots that we weren't necessarily ready for. They played us very well and this was a fun match to open at home with."

The Cavs used 15 players in the match with 10 different players recording at least one kill. Miller led all players with 12 kills and was immediately followed by an 11-kill night by Hogan. Leslie Hanks (Hockinson, Wash./Hockinson H.S.) and Ashley Jibby (Post Falls, Idaho/Post Falls H.S.) each reached double figures in digs with 15 for Hanks and 10 for Jibby. Lindsay Mangan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina H.S.) registered 30 assists in the first two sets alone to lead the floor.

"Tonight proves that it doesn't matter who we have on the floor," said senior Melanie Miller (Hillsboro, Ore./Liberty H.S.) we will find a way to work together to get the victory."

Concordia University Volleyball team now turns their attention to Saturday Aug. 31 as they host Lewis and Clark State College at Cavalier Court. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
