PORTLAND, Ore. –
The No. 5-ranked Concordia women's soccer team battled to a 0-0 tie with No. 18 Westmont in their 2013 home season opener, as both teams fought their way through two overtime periods tonight in front of a crowd of 415 fans at Tuominen Yard on Friday night.

The tie was the first ever for the Concordia women's team in two-plus years at their new complex. With the latest result, the CU women now hold a 10-1-1 all-time record at Tuominen Yard.

"There was a great atmosphere in the stands tonight and the match lived up to its billing," CU head coach Grant Landy said. "This is exactly what we needed at this point of the year. This is why we schedule tough opponents. Facing this type of high pressure in a high-octane type of game early in the year is only going to help us get better."

Concordia (2-0-1) outshot their opponents 13-8 and had 12 corner kicks while Westmont College (1-0-1) tallied five corner-kick opportunities over the course of the 110-minute contest.

In the 39th minute, the Cavaliers looked to head into the locker room up a goal as Annika Hayman (Redmond, Wash./Redmond H.S.) found herself in traffic deep inside the six-yard box and connected on a pair of close-range attacks. Hayman gained a second attempt after Westmont goalkeeper, Lindsey Smith deflected the initial offering back immediately back to Hayman awhile securing the second bid without added danger.

"Westmont has a lot of juniors and seniors so we knew they were bringing an experienced group. Their goalkeeper was outstanding tonight," Landy said.

As the second half began, Concordia came out on the attack, keeping the ball in the offensive half of the pitch. In the 68th minute, Hannah Kimsey (Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River H.S.) attempted to put the home team up but a diving Smith corralled her shot. After a quick foul by Westmont, the Cavaliers would go on the attack again, but only to see a shot from Hannah Scott (Milwaukie, Ore./Milwaukie H.S.) go wide of the right post.

With the end of regulation, it was sudden death for both teams as they moved into overtime sessions. Neither team would find space in the extra time with Concordia's Bobbi Eckler (Vancouver, Wash./Union H.S.) taking the lone attempt at the 106:05 mark with Smith once again coming up with one of her six saves.

Smith's counterpart, Concordia freshman Olivia Brock (Olympia, Wash./Olympia H.S.) collected two saves for her first complete game shutout of her career. Westmont's Kelsey Steck fired both Warrior shots on goal, once at the 76:45 mark and minutes later at the 85:05 mark.

"I thought we started out with a front foot and had some good early chances. We didn't capitalize and Westmont found their rhythm. Overall, I'm pleased with our intensity and word rate. We are a deep team and got contributions from a lot of players. We are going to win, lose and draw as a group and if they continue to buy into that concept we have the capability of becoming a great team."

Concordia will now head on the road as they travel to NCAA DII Saint Martin's University on Thursday, Sept. 5; kickoff is 5:30 p.m.
