KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Defending national runner-up Mobile (Ala.) of the Southern States Athletic Conference claims the top spot in the NAIA Men’s Soccer Coaches’ Top 25 poll, the national office announced Tuesday. Mobile’s selection—with 19 of 20 first-place votes and 560 total points—gives the 3-0 Rams their first No. 1 ranking since 2002.

Mobile is now one of just nine schools to have held the No. 1 ranking at least three times. The Rams were previously ranked No. 1 in the Oct. 8, 2002 and Sept. 12, 2000 polls.

Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) of the American Midwest Conference, a national quarterfinalist from 2012 who holds an unblemished 3-0 record this season, garnered the other first-place vote and accumulated 526 total points to earn the No. 2 ranking.

Southern Poly (Ga.), who owns a 3-0-1 record this year, received 524 points en route to the No. 3 position. This is the third-straight poll in which the Southern States Athletic Conference has had multiple teams ranked in the top five.

Two teams who were ranked outside of the top 10 in the preseason have played their way into the top five in the first regular season edition of the Top 25. No. 4 Hastings (Neb.) and No. 5 Benedictine (Kan.) —both 4-0 on the season—round out the top five with 477 and 474 points, respectively.

Within the poll, Benedictine made the largest jump, moving up 12 spots, while Concordia (Calif.) fell 17 spots, landing at No. 23.

There were four newcomers to the Top 25: two who received votes in the preseason poll and two who were not ranked. No. 13 Grand View (Iowa) and No. 24 SCAD Savannah (Ga.) moved from the receiving votes category into the Top 25.  No. 12 Biola (Calif.) and No. 20 Indiana Wesleyan went from unranked directly into the Top 25. This is the first Top 25 appearance for Indiana Wesleyan since 2008. Grand View, SCAD Savannah and Biola were all ranked in multiple polls last season.

St. Thomas (Fla.), Jamestown (N.D.), Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) and Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) fell out of the Top 25.

The Southern States Athletic Conference again leads all conferences/independents/unaffiliated groupings with five teams among the Top 25: Mobile, Southern Poly, No. 10 Belhaven, No. 16 Auburn Montgomery, and No. 21 Southern Wesleyan (S.C.).

The Heart of America Athletic Conference, with three, and the American Midwest Conference, Mid-South Conference and the Golden State Athletic Conference, with two each, also placed multiple teams in the Top 25.

This poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences, independents and unaffiliated groups. For the entire 2013 Coaches' Poll schedule, click here.

NOTES: (All information dates back to 2000) Belhaven (Miss.) is the first preseason No. 1 to lose its No. 1 ranking in the first regular season poll since 2008, when Azusa Pacific (Calif.) fell to No. 7… Last year’s preseason No. 1, Lindsey Wilson, held the No. 1 position in the first five polls and remained among the top three teams for the entire 2012 season… This is the first time Lindsey Wilson has not been ranked among the top five teams since the 2011 preseason poll, when they were ranked No. 6… Lindsey Wilson is the longest consecutively ranked active school at 72-straight polls, dating back to the 2007 Preseason Top 25 Poll… Rio Grande is next in line with 65 consecutive rankings, followed by Belhaven at 38 and Mobile at 37... Lindsey Wilson also boasts the most all-time No. 1 rankings with 44, followed by Rio Grande with 39, Bethel (Tenn.) with 11 and Auburn Montgomery with 9... Overall, 18 different teams have claimed the No. 1 spot in the poll… Sixteen of the 21 conferences/independents/unaffiliated groups are represented in the first regular season Top 25 poll... Since 2000, just two teams have spent the entire season ranked No. 1—Bethel in 2009 and Rio Grande in 2004.
