DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—Buoyed by an 81st-minute goal from senior Hannah Kimsey (Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River H.S.), No. 3-ranked Concordia University defeated No. 6-ranked Northwood University (Fla.) in the opening match of the Habitat for Humanity Tournament hosted by Embry-Riddle University on Friday.

With the win, Concordia improved to 4-0-1 on the season and will face the host Embry-Riddle Eagles, ranked No. 4 in the NAIA, on Sunday. Northwood fell to 3-1-1 on the season.

The Cavaliers will face the host team, No. 4-ranked Embry-Riddle on Sunday.

Just eight minutes in, Concordia managed the first two real chances at goal as Erin Huisingh (Pasco, Wash./Chiawana H.S.) directed a shot across the face of the net but just right of the post. Huisingh returned at the 12:54 mark with a shot directly at Northwood keeper Matilda Ojaniemi.

Despite holding a slight advantage in possession, the Cavs would generate just one more shot attempt in the first half, a 29th-minute strike by Morgan Rooney (Tucson, Ariz./Catalina Foothills H.S.) which was blocked by the Seahawk defense.

Northwood, however, crated a pair of dangerous chances via three-time All-American Helen Lynsky. From five yards out, Lynsky flicked a header just over the cross bar in the 32nd minute and returned with a header from a similar distance which was snared by CU goalie Olivia Brock (Olympia, Wash./Olympia H.S.) in the 40th minute.

Looking to break the tie just moments before the end of the half, the Seahawks' Johanna Enberg fired from 10 yards out which Brock also corralled to preserve the shutout.

After both teams managed just four shots each in the first half, the sides combined for that total in the second half. Taking the last attempt of the game with 80:02 showing on the clock, the Cavaliers finally lit the scoreboard by breaking down the right side of the Northwood defense.

In the back third of the pitch, junior Jasmin Ayala (Simi Valley, Calif./Valley Christian H.S.) stepped in front of a would-be pass to change possession and quickly scuttled the ball forward to Alicia Kolter (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union H.S.). Taking her defender straight on and steering back towards the goal, Kolter managed to deliver a cross to the opposite side of the goal where Hannah Kimsey (Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River H.S.) easily placed the ball in the back of the now open net.

Holding the Seahawks to just six attempts, none of which occurred over the final 27 minutes, the Concordia defense held on for its fourth shutout of the season. The Cavs have now outscored its five opponents 18-1 on the season.

Northwood finished with a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks, but also committed 22 fouls compared to 12 for the Cavs.
