Mountaineers and Pioneers Play to a 1-1 Draw
CANTON, Ohio – Eastern Oregon University women’s soccer four game winning-streak came to a halt on Monday afternoon when they played Malone to a 1-1 tie. EOU continues to have its best start to the season as they are 4-0-1 on the year.
EOU got onto the scoreboard early against Malone. After the Pioneers were called for a foul, Erika Whitehurst scored her third goal of the season, on a penalty kick, in the 15th minutes to put the Mountaineers on top, 1-0.
Late in the first half it looked as if Malone would break onto the scoreboard and tie the match at one when Christine Najjar took a shot on goal, but Kailey Moss came up with the save to keep EOU up 1-0 late in the first half.
Mauriana Gonzalez tried to extend the Mountaineers lead to, 2-0, late in the first half but her shot flew high and the first half ended with EOU ahead of Malone, 1-0.
Malone had one of its best scoring chances 10 minutes into the second half. Ally Smith’s shot hit the crossbar and bounced back into play and Leah Arnold got the rebound and fired a shot high. EOU remained ahead, 1-0.
Two minutes later, Malone scored its first goal of the game by Brianna Smith. Smith cut on her left foot and put the ball in the back of the net, tying the game at 1-1. Najjar assisted on the goal.
EOU’s best scoring chance came with 15 minutes left in the second half as E. Whitehurst fired a shot on goal. However, Staci Hackett recorded the save to keep the game tied at one.
Ten minutes later, Malone’s Smith was looking for her second goal of the contest but Moss stood tall and recorded the save keeping the game tied at one. The game would remained tied for the remainder of the second half and go into overtime.
In the first overtime period of play, Eastern Oregon had the best scoring opportunity as Tori Fedora had a shot to end the game but Hackett recorded the save and kept the game tied at one going to the second overtime period.
Neither team had a scoring shot in the second overtime and the only shot taken came from Gonzalez’s foot but the shot was blacked. EOU and Malone played to a 1-1 tie.
EOU returns home for a scrimmage this Saturday at 3:30 p.m. when they face North Idaho College. EOU opens up Cascade Collegiate Conference play on Oct. 3rd when they travel to Portland to take on Concordia at 7 p.m.
