BOX SCORE
PORTLAND, Ore. – After a scoreless first half, Corban's men's soccer team got goals from sophomore
James Williamson, freshman
Bobby Hutchin, and junior
Josh Hamilton en route to earning a 3-0 Cascade Collegiate Conference victory over Warner Pacific Saturday at Palermini Stadium on the campus of David Douglas High School.
With the win, the Warriors begin their season 5-0-0 overall and 2-0-0 in league matches. Corban is within striking distance of tying the best start in school history, as then-Western Baptist began the 1990 season undefeated in its opening six games. On the other hand, Warner Pacific falls to 1-3-0 overall and 0-2-0 in CCC games.
Corban had a pair of scoring opportunities in the first half, as freshman
Kemar Prince hit the post in the fourth minute before junior
Derik Chaney hit the cross bar in the 27th minute. Unfortunately for the Warriors, neither rebound was put into the back of the net resulting in a scoreless tie at halftime.
Playing with showers throughout the game on a cool night, neither team could muster much offense over the opening 45 minutes with Corban registering seven more shots (9-to-2) than Warner Pacific.
Just a little over 15 minutes into the second half, Williamson was able to head in a shot past Warner Pacific's goalkeeper off a free-kick from freshman
Tim Kagey. This was Williamson's first goal of the season and second of his young career.
Neither team would get on the board again until the game's final few minutes when Hutchin broke away from the Knights' defense to earn a one-on-one chance against Warner Pacific's goalkeeper. Wasting little time making a decision, Hutchin chipped a shot over the goalie to extend Corban's lead to 2-0. The goal was Hutchin's third of the season, which ties him for the team-lead so far.
A mere 40 seconds later, Hamilton had a similar chance at the 88:45 mark with an open breakaway and a chip shot over the goalkeeper that resulted in the Warriors' third and final goal of the night. This was Hamilton's third goal of the year, as the third-year Warrior is tied for the team lead in that category.
For the second game in a row, freshman goalkeeper
Jordan Farr did not need to make a save en route to earning the second shutout of his young career. On the other hand, Warner Pacific's goalkeeper Dorian Lair made a game-high six saves against Corban.
The Warriors had an advantage over Warner Pacific in total shots with Corban having nine shots on-goal versusthe Knights' zero.
Corban will return to the field on Wednesday, September 25th, in a CCC game against Northwest beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Warrior Field in Salem. The Warriors have a chance to equal the best start in school history with a win over the visiting Eagles later this week.
