BOX SCORE
MONMOUTH, Ore.—Dropping the opening set for just the third time all season, the No. 20-ranked Concordia volleyball team defeated NCAA DII Western Oregon 3-2 (14-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-17, 15-11) to extend its winning streak to 11 matches.
With the win, Concordia improved to 13-2 on the season while WOU fell to 4-8 on the year. The Cavaliers will return to the court, and to Cascade Collegiate Conference play, on Friday when they travel to face cross-town rival Warner Pacific College in Portland.
The Cavs got off to a rough start on Wednesday with four early errors which led to a 7-1 WOU lead. The home side went on to hit a match-high .433 to dominate CU 25-14 in the opener.
After a blowout in the first set, the score remained tight in the follow up as neither team could generate more than a three-point advantage. Concordia grabbed a 6-3 lead on a dump shot by Lindsay Mangan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina H.S.). The Wolves responded with a short spree to briefly take the lead at 9-8 and again ay 10-9, but failed to create separation.
The two teams played to late ties at 21, 22 and 23-all before CU secured the equalizing win off back-to-back kills from Melanie Miller (Hillsboro, Ore./Liberty H.S.) and Lindsay Montgomery.
Up against a 9-2 deficit to start the third set, a Brianna Hogan (Portland, Ore./Centennial H.S.) kill brought the Cavs back to within a point with the score 13-12 before WOU retaliated with a 7-4 spurt capped by a Krissi Kemper kill. CU nearly pulled even with the Wolves, topping out at 24-23 following a termination by Mariah Raudsepp (Dundee, Ore./C.S. Lewis Academy), only to see Western Oregon escape with a kill by Hannah Deede.
Facing elimination in the fourth set, the Cavaliers uncorked a 10-5 lead out of the gate to force a WOU timeout. The break momentarily stalled the CU attack, helping WOU climb back to within three with the score 16-13. Holding the Wolves to a .024 hitting percentage in the set, a match-low for either team, Concordia solidified the set with a 9-3 run which culminated on a Hogan swing off an assist from senior Lindsay Mangan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina H.S.).
The Cavs looked to run away with the finale, snaring a quick 3-0 lead, but WOU registered a 7-1 streak to stun CU and force a timeout. Out of the huddle, the Cavaliers chipped away at the gap, eventually tying the set at 10-10 on an Amanda Goringe (Aloha, Ore./Aloha H.S.) kill. Goringe returned with another strike to give CU its first lead in the final set.
Kemper evened the set at 11-11 but the Cavs continued to keep its momentum, plucking the final four points of the match for the overall win. Montgomery proved especially pivotal in the waning moments with kill credits for the final three points.
Stein and Hogan each finished with 14 kills to share the match lead. Raudsepp also reached double digits with 12 kills and a healthy .296 hitting percentage. Mangan tallied 56 of the team's 59 assists to set a new season best while Shantel Gritsch (Gresham, Ore./Clackamas H.S.) grabbed a season best 33 digs.
Three others joined Gritsch with double-digits in digs as Montgomery (13), Ashley Jibby (Post Falls, Idaho/Post Falls H.S.) (13) and Mangan (12) helped CU accumulate a decisive 99-78 overall advantage in the category.
Western Oregon finished with a .225 to .186 advantage in hitting percentage and were powerful at the front with 16 total blocks, compared to just six for the Cavs. WOU, however, was plagued throughout the match with 12 serving errors and five ball-handling errors
Samantha Moore led WOU with three kills, one up on Kemper for the team lead. Despite being briefly injured in the fifth set, WOU libero Madison Kuther hauled in 35 digs.
