EUGENE, Ore. – Playing their first ever match against an NCAA Division I team, the Northwest Christian University men’s soccer team didn’t back down from the challenge, falling to Oregon State on Friday, 5-0. NCU held the Beavers to just one first half goal with an impressive performance.
The stat lines would indicate a one-sided affair and, as to be expected against Pac-12 level talent, the game got out of reach late in the second half. However, a score from Mikhail Doholis in the 23rd minute was the only blemish of the first half as NCU avoided any more damage despite 6 shots-on-goal in the frame.
Four second half goals, all coming within a 19-minute stretch, would give the Beavers (7-2) a comfortable lead. In the end, OSU held a 28-2 advantage in shots and allowed just one shot on goal for the Beacons. Within the first ten minutes an aggressive NCU offense had two solid looks at the goal, but a Steve Jusko attempt would give Beaver goalkeeper Matt Bersano his only save of the night.
The Beacons finished with 11 saves, eight for starting keeper Max Torres who played the first 65 minutes. Senior Erik Carrasco came in for a 19 minute stretch, grabbing the other three saves. John Castro went in between the pipes for the final six minutes and didn’t have to face a single shot on goal.
Head Coach Brett Bentley said, “Considering we got to the half down just 1-0 without conceding too many really good scoring chances, it was a little disappointing to then give up four goals in the second half. Offensively we saw some progress against a great team. My hat goes off to Oregon State. They are a well-coached team, very organized offensively. They should see a lot of success moving forward and I wish them the best of luck in the Pac-12.”
The Beacons (0-7) will have to turn around quickly as they come home to face Northwest University in Cascade Collegiate Conference action on Saturday afternoon. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00 pm at Mike Kelly Field in Springfield.
