PALO ALTO, Calif. – Eric Avila and Summer Cano gave the Southern Oregon University cross country teams just the boost the Raiders expected Saturday morning at the 40th annual Stanford Invitational.

Competing for the first time this season and against the best competition they'll see, Avila placed seventh to pace the second-ranked Raider men and Cano was 18th for the 25th-ranked Raider women. The SOU men scored fourth out of 15 non-NCAA Division I schools and the women were fourth of 11.

Thirty-three schools were represented in all, making for 243 entrants in the men's race and 222 in the women's.

Avila, a junior, completed the completed the race – which was 8,000 meters for men and 6,000 for women on the Stanford Golf Course – in 24 minutes, 38 seconds, shaving 25 seconds off his time at the meet last season when he placed 25th. He was one of two non-Division I runners in the top 10.

Cano, also a junior, led all non-Division I runners, finishing in 22:09. Alex Rudd was next for the Raiders, coming in at 23:16 to place 67th, and Rebecca Lupescu finished in 23:31 for 71st.

Zach Boyd-Helm wrapped up in 26:28 for 77th, pacing five other Raiders who were within a minute of each other: Eric Ghelfi (85th), Trevor Lynn (94th), Kevin Jorgensen (104th), Hector Aleman (130th) and Cary Dunagan (134th).

Two NCAA Division II schools were ahead of the Raider men – fourth-ranked Colorado Mines and No. 5 Chico State – along with junior college power San Bernardino Valley. Division II powers Chico State and Simon Fraser were out front for the women. The Masters, ranked No. 9 in the NAIA, just edged SOU.

The Stanford men won overall for the 19th straight year led by winners Erik Olson and Jim Rosa, who both finished in 24:25. The Stanford women won for the 10th straight season as Jessica Tonn and Aisling Cuffe won in 21:00 each.

Both SOU teams are off until Oct. 19, when they'll compete at the Santa Clara Bronco Invite.
