Day One of Red Lion Soccer Challenge Completed
SPOKANE, Wash. – The first day of the Cascade/Frontier Red Lion Soccer Challenge is in the books. The second annual event matches teams from the two Pacific Northwest conferences competing in athletic events in Spokane, Washington. The matches continue Saturday.
Women's Soccer
Eagles Score Early, Shut Out Carroll
The Northwest University women’s soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over Carroll College in the opening game of the Cascade/Frontier Red Lion Challenge on Friday afternoon at the Dwight Merkel Sports Complex.
Rachel Saleen tallied the game’s only goal in the 17th minute to lead Northwest (1-4) to their first win of the season. Saleen struck on her only shot attempt of the game and scored unassisted.
Northwest finished with a 9-8 advantage in shots attempted with six of those attempts on goal. Acacia Johnson was the only Eagle to take multiple shots with two. Carroll (2-1) put seven of their eight attempts on goal with Kaley Edgar and Haley Jensen taking two shots apiece.
Patty Hughes earned her first win and shutout of the season by making seven saves. Jamie Carter suffered the loss despite making five saves for Carroll.
Northwest returns to action on Saturday when they face Rocky Mountain at 1 p.m. while Carroll faces Northwest Christian at 6:30 p.m.
Great Falls Shutouts Northwest Christian, 1-0

cer team took a 1-0 victory over Northwest Christian during the first day of the Cascade/Frontier Red Lion Challenge on Friday afternoon at the Dwight Merkel Sports Complex.
Great Falls (1-1-1) earned their first win of the season with a goal from Danielle DeLaVina in the 20th minute. She scored the goal on a free kick from just outside the penalty area.
Northwest Christian (1-3) took more shots in the game that UGF, 7-6, but they only had one on goal while the Argos managed four shots on frame.
Jacelyn Morris claimed the shutout victory in goal for UGF with one save. Mishayla Bertelsen made three stops in defeat.
Great Falls will complete the weekend with a 3:30 p.m. contest with College of Idaho on Saturday. Northwest Christian has a 6:30 p.m. game against Carroll College
Rocky Tops COI in Double OT
It took double overtime, but the Rocky Mountain College women’s soccer team claimed a 2-1 win over College of Idaho at the Cascade/Frontier Red Lion Challenge on Friday afternoon at the Dwight Merkel Sports Complex.
The two teams played to a scoreless first half with College of Idaho (1-2) holding a 3-0 advantage in shots at the break. Rocky Mountain (3-1) would turn up the pressure in the second half and took the early 1-0 lead when Alex Harvey finished her first shot of the night in the 70th minute with an assist from Therese Hagbyhn.
C of I would find the equalizer in the 85th minute when Shea Yuma put away her final shot of the contest. Regulation would come to an end with the game all even at 1-1 despite Rocky holding a 9-3 edge in second half shots.
Neither team would get any shots off during the first 10 minute overtime session. It would be Rocky again applying the pressure in the second OT period and in the 103rd minute, Harvey would tally her second goal of the night and send RMC into celebration.
Malin Johansson recorded the win in goal for Rocky by making five saves. Melissa Holmes-Joseph took the loss for C of I with six saves.
Rocky Mountain wraps up the weekend with a 1 p.m. game against Northwest University on Saturday. College of Idaho will face Great Falls at 3:30 p.m.

Gore Scores Five as Rocky Defeats Yotes
SPOKANE, Wash. - The Rocky Mountain College men's soccer team got five goals from Oliver Gore as they defeated College of Idaho 5-3 at the Cascade/Frontier Red Lion Challenge on Friday afternoon at the Dwight Merkel Sports Complex.
Gore would open the scoring in the fourth minute when he finished from inside the penalty area after a long ball played in by Chris Jermy. The two would hook up again in the 12th minute when Jermy sent a cross inside the area that Gore finished to give Rocky (5-0-1) the early 2-0 lead.
College of Idaho (0-3) would fight back to even after Brandon Smith hit a strike from 12 yards out off a delivery from Nicko Morena in the 17th minute. Four minutes later it was Yan Gioseffi on a penalty kick that would level the match at 2-2.
The lead was short lived as Gore notched the hat trick when he headed a ball over the keeper after a long ball that was played from the Rocky keeper Joachim Soderstrom n the 23rd minute. The lead would reach 4-2 at halftime when Gore dribbled down the middle of the field a fired a shot from eight yards out in the 41st minute.
The fifth goal of the afternoon for Gore came just four minute into the second half as he tapped in a Mikey Wall corner kick in the 49th minute. College of Idaho got a goal from Gioseffi on a free kick from the top of the penalty area in the 86th minute to wrap up the day's scoring.
Rocky took 17 shots in the contest while C of I attempted seven. The key was the 11 shots on goal by RMC to just seven by the Yotes.
Soderstrom earned the victory in net by making four saves before being replaced in the 71st minute. Colin Benham-Marin took the loss with five saves in 78 minutes.
Rocky will face Northwest Christian on Saturday at 4 p.m. while C of I has a 1 p.m. game with Great Falls on tap.
Great Falls Takes Down Northwest Christian, 7-1
The University of Great Falls men's soccer team opened the Cascade/Frontier Red Lion Challenge with a 7-1 victory over Northwest Christian on Friday afternoon at the Dwight Merkel Sports Complex.
Great Falls (2-1) scored the seven straight goals in the first 66 minutes of the contest. Andrew Gillen opened the scoring in the 17th minute when he finished from eight yards on the first of three assists by Juan Valderrama. UGF would carry a 2-0 lead into halftime after Paul Sliwa headed in a corner kick delivered by Valderrama in the 32nd minute.
Luis Torres would add a double in the 46th and 63rd minutes on assists from Danny Delgadillo and Valderrama. Renan Zampieri tallied a goal between the two Torres goal in the 51st minute. Delgadillo would strike unassisted in the 64th minute with Zampieri adding the seventh UGF goal in the 66th minute.
The lone Northwest Christian (0-2) came in the 76th minute as Joshua Martin tapped in a long throw from Ian Hawksford to avoid the shutout.
Great Falls had a 17-6 advantage in shots taken and they put 11 of those attempts on goal. Jose Pena earned the win in net by making two saves before being lifted in the 71st minute.
Great Falls will look for a 2-0 trip to Spokane on Saturday when they face College of Idaho at 1 p.m. Northwest Christian will play Rocky Mountain College at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
