EOU Volleyball Sweeps Lady Yotes

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The No. 21 Eastern Oregon University Volleyball team defeated No. 6 College of Idaho, 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-17) Friday night.

College of Idaho (0-6, 0-1 CCC) started off fast in set one as the Lady Yotes scored seven of the first eight points of the match. However, Eastern Oregon (10-2, 1-0 CCC) bounced right back. Trailing, 8-2, EOU scored eight of the next 10 points to tie the match at 10.

The game stayed tight until EOU took a, 14-13, lead after a service error by Kylee Nawahine. After Eastern Oregon took the lead, they held it the rest of the match. College of Idaho tried to make a comeback late in the set and cut EOU’s lead to 19-18 but the Mountaineers scored the next five points to extend its lead to 24-18. EOU took the first set 25-19.

The second set saw Eastern Oregon race out to a, 4-0, lead before the Lady Yotes scored its first point. Eastern Oregon continued to dominate and the closest the Lady Yotes got to the Mountaineers the rest of the set was four points, 9-5.

With EOU leading, 13-7, in set two, the Mountaineers scored the next seven points, capped off by a Taylor Stewart kill to take a 21-7 lead. Eastern Oregon took set two, 25-12, and a 2-0 lead over College of Idaho.

Set three was a back and forth battle as both teams came out strong. EOU held a, 6-3, lead after a kill by Casey Loper. Eastern Oregon started to pull away after Loper’s kill but the Lady Yotes battled back and tied the third set at 13 after an attack error by Katie Keeney.

With the match tied at 13, Eastern Oregon scored the next five points to take the lead, which they did not give back the rest of the match. EOU grew its lead to nine points in the third set and took set three, 25-17, for the sweep.

The victory for Eastern Oregon was the second victory for the Mountaineers over the Lady Yotes since 1996. The first victory came last season at Quinn Coliseum.

Loper had a game-high 11 kills in the match to lead EOU. Liz Myers led College of Idaho with nine kills.

EOU returns to action on Monday, Sept. 9, when they step out of CCC action for the last time to face Walla Walla University at 7 p.m. College of Idaho returns to action on Sept. 11 when they face Lewis-Clarke State at 6 p.m. in Caldwell, Idaho.
