Southern Oregon began the 2013 conference schedule with a three-set sweep over host Corban Friday in Salem.
Southern Oregon Opens Cascade Collegiate Conference Play With Sweep Over Corban

SALEM, Ore. – Nationally-ranked Southern Oregon University pushed its winning streak to four matches with a three-set sweep, 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-20), over host Corban University Friday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
With tonight's result, Southern Oregon improves to 4-4 overall and 1-0 in league matches and Corban falls to 2-8 overall and 0-1 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play
Southern Oregon was led offensively by Paulia Pinheiro with a match-high tying 13 kills, while Liz Madden and Tyana Andrews added nine and seven kills, respectively. Lindsay Verboort and Lauren McGowne combined to hand out 41 assists for the Raiders, as Verboort registered a match-high 22 for SOU. In the back row, Renee Yomtob registered a match-high 15 digs for Southern Oregon to go along with a match-high four blocks by Madden.
For Corban, Olivia Shropshire tallied a match-high tying 13 kills to go along with seven digs defensively. The trio of Miah Smith, Claire Bailey, and Payton Wilcox tallied five kills each. The setting duo of Haley Meili and Wilcox combined to hand out 27 assists, as Meili registered 16 assists to go with Wilcox's 11. Defensively, libero Katherine Salness anchored Corban's back line with a team-high 13 digs with Bailey, Wilcox, and Jenny Harman tallying a pair of blocks each for the Warriors.
The opening set would see Southern Oregon jump out to a 10-point lead (20-10) before Corban used a 5-3 run to pull within eight points (23-15) on a service ace by Salness. Unfortunately that would be as close as the Warriors would get in Set #1, as Southern Oregon scored the final two points en route to winning the first set by the final score of 25-15.
Set #2 would begin with Corban earning a two-point lead (11-9) on a kill by Mikenzee Frazier before Southern Oregon used an 11-3 run to pull ahead by six points (20-14) on a kill by Pinheiro. Despite Corban getting within five points (21-16) on a kill by Smith, the visiting Raiders' lead with too much to overcome as Southern Oregon cruised to a 25-18 victory.
The third and final set would see Southern Oregon jump out to a quick 6-0 lead before Corban used an 11-4 run to take a one-point lead (11-10) on a combo block by Harman and Wilcox. A back-and-forth battle would happen over the next several points, as Southern Oregon clung to a slim lead (22-19) forcing a timeout by Corban. The host Warriors would get within two points (22-20) on a kill by Shropshire before Southern Oregon scored the final three points to take the match in three straight sets (25-20).
Both teams will return to action tomorrow – Saturday, September 7th – with Southern Oregon takes its winning streak on the road to Eugene to take on Northwest Christian and Corban hosting the Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Tech inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
