EUGENE, Ore. – Sophomore Chandler Gabrio (Creswell HS) had the best game of her young career, scoring 27 points and 15 rebounds, lifting the Beacons to a 74-71 win over Concordia University in the Morse Event Center on Friday Night. The win broke a seven-game losing streak and gave NCU their first CCC victory of the season.
Two early three-pointers from Lexi Campbell sent the Cavs onto an 11-3 run to begin the game. CU stretched the lead to eleven and held a 27-16 lead with nine minutes remaining. The Beacons used a 10-3 streak of their own to climb within four points and had it within two after a Chandler Gabrio three-pointer with 36 seconds remaining. The Cavs answered with a three-pointer from Gabi Beyer and took a 43-38 lead into the intermission.
The second half was a show of strength from the NCU defense, holding the Cavs to just 26% shooting in the period including a 1-for-9 clip from three-point range. Concordia had scored the first two buckets of the period to take a nine-point lead, but NCU clamped down and methodically climbed back into the game, eventually tying the score 52-52 and taking a 54-52 lead on a Hannah Frederick layup. NCU never trailed again and hung on for their first win since November.
Gabrio finished the night shooting 7-for-13 from the field and 11-for-16 at the free-throw line to collect her 27 points. Her 15 boards included five on the offensive end. "We took another step in the right direction tonight," said Head Coach Liz Turner-Bolton. "Chandler's strength is tough to defend on the block. She shook off some early turnovers to have one heck of a game."
After scoring just three points in the first half, Frederick came alive to finish with 18, adding a team-high five assists. Turner-Bolton said, "Hannah did a nice job of reading in space and seeing her opportunities tonight."
Chantell Stanton added 9 points and four steals and Melyssa Weber came off the bench to score nine and seven rebounds. The Beacons out-boarded the Cavs, 46-41.
Concordia (3-14, 1-5 CCC) had four players in double digits, led by McKenna Daly with 17 and a team-high seven rebounds. Campbell finished the night with 16 points, hitting four treys, and Caitlyn McCutcheon scored 11. Sarah LeTourneau added ten points off the bench.
The Beacons (4-10, 1-5 CCC) will welcome Warner Pacific (5-12, 1-5) into the Morse Event Center on Saturday night at 5:30 pm, looking for their first winning streak of the year.
