Mendezona's 27 points Helps Lead Eagles to Win
PORTLAND, Ore. –
Domi Mendezona's game high 27 points helped lift the Northwest University Eagles to a 67-61 Cascade Conference victory over Warner Pacific tonight.
Down 19-9 eight minutes into the first half, Northwest would outscore the Knights 16-4 as
Jenna Lewis' three pointer would pull NU to within one, 23-22 and a 3-pointer by
Domi Mendezona 5 seconds later would give the Eagles a 25-23 lead with 2:47 to go in the period. Two free throws by
Alyssa Dario would increase the lead to 27-23 as Northwest would take a 27-25 lead into the break.
Warner Pacific would tie the game at 27-all coming out of halftime, but a lay in by
Sanda Milovic and a three point play by
Chanara Greene would give the lead back to the Eagles at 32-27 with 18:36 left on the clock. WPC would get to within one point 5 times in the half, but each time Northwest would answer with a score or run of their own to maintain the slim lead. With 2:07 remaining in the game, Lacy Wood would score for Warner Pac to make it 62-61, but two free throws by
Jordan Asher and a driving lay in by Mendezona would give the lead to NU for good at 66-61 and Asher would hit a free throw with 2 seconds to go to ice the win for the Eagles.
Domi Mendezona led all scorers with her 27 points for Northwest U (12-8, 4-4 CCC) while
Jordan Asher would add 10 points and
Sanda Milovic dropping in 9 for the Eagles. NU shot 42% for the game and hit 21 of 29 free throws for 73% shooting from the charity stripe. NU also won the rebounding battle 45-37.
Warner Pacific (5-14, 1-7 CCC) was led by Janelle Weiss' 13 points while teammate Jordan Wilcox added 12 points and 6 rebounds for the Knights who were held to 31% shooting.
