CU's Taylor Sonnenberg provided two of the team's six aces against NCU on Saturday.
Balanced attack carries Cavs to Beacon sweep
PORTLAND, Ore.—With five different players recording at least four kills, Concordia University protected its home court with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-21) sweep against Northwest Christian University on Saturday.
A day after surviving five-setter against Warner Pacific, Northwest Christian (6-9, 3-11 CCC) jumped out to a quick start against the Cavaliers, using early kills by Chandler Gabrio to uncork a 7-3 start to the match.
Down 10-6 following an ace from NCU's Haley Damien, the Cavs scored four straight to even the set before going up by as many as six points (22-16) on a
Brenna Huwe (Troutdale, Ore./Reynolds H.S.) termination.
After hitting .270 in the opener, the Cavs upped its attack rate to .440 in the second set with a dozen kills recorded without a single attacking error en route to the 25-13 win.
Much like the first, the Beacons grabbed an early lead, eventually doubling up the Cavs, 10-5, on an error by the CU offense. The Cavs' attack regrouped to eventually even the set at 16-16 via an ace from
Taylor Sonnenberg (Moses Lake, Wash./Moses Lake H.S.).
Still even at 19-19, the Cavs closed out the set with the final six points of the match.
Gabrio led all players with 12 kills and was followed by 10 winning strikes by teammate Chelsea McGowan.
Lindsey Dorsey (Salem, Ore./Sprague H.S.) led Concordia with nine kills and was followed by Huwe (8),
Ashley Jibby (Post Falls, Idaho/Post Falls H.S.) (8) and
Nicole Barth (Vancouver, Wash./Skyview H.S.) (6).
Anna Chizum (Happy Valley, Ore./Clackamas H.S.) orchestrated the Concordia offense with a match-high 31 assists against 28 assists from NCU counterpart Alyssa Dorr.
Concordia's
Leslie Hanks (Hockinson, Wash./Hockinson H.S.) recorded a match-high 14 digs to help the Cavs create a 60-52 edge.
Concordia will continue its Cascade Collegiate Conference schedule at Evergreen State on Oct. 17 while NCU will host Oregon Tech next Friday.
