Erin Huisingh scored twice for Concordia on Saturday against Oregon Tech.
Seniors drive Concordia in 5-0 win against OIT
PORTLAND, Ore – Minutes after celebrating Senior Day at Tuominen Yard, fourth-year players
Ashley Ames (Liberty Lake, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) and
Erin Huisingh (Pasco, Wash./Chiawana H.S.) connected on early goals to lead No. 3-ranked Concordia University to a 5-0 win over Oregon Tech on Saturday afternoon.
Concordia (13-1-1, 6-1-0 CCC) took control early on Senior Day, moving as many as nine players into the attacking half and bringing heavy pressure against the Oregon Tech (5-9-2, 0-6-2 CCC) defense.
Ames started the scoring in the 12th minute, heading in a crisp cross from
Annika Hayman (Redmond, Wash./Redmond H.S.), another senior, to beat goalkeeper Rebekah Matteri.
Erin Huisingh (Pasco, Wash./Chiawana H.S.) made it 2-0 in the 20th minute when she took a long pass from
Ariel Kanable (Beaverton, Ore./Southridge H.S.), then beat her defender and dribbled around Matteri on the right before blasting a shot back the other direction. In the 38th minute, the Cavaliers scored again, as
Diane Dyra (Camas, Wash./Camas H.S.) notched her first career goal on a bending shot over Matteri from 25 yards out.
The Owls were unable to possess the ball for any extended period or mount a serious challenge in the first half, a trend that continued after the intermission. Huisingh scored again in the 48th minute off a
Bobbi Eckler (Vancouver, Wash./Union H.S.) cross after Eckler made a strong run into the right side of the box.
With Oregon Tech struggling to clear the ball properly, the Cavaliers struck again in the 51st minute. Eckler won the ball at midfield and tapped it ahead to Ames, who found Kanable for a high-arching shot that made the score 5-0.
Oregon Tech never managed to find any offensive footing, failing to register a single shot or corner kick attempt. Concordia finished with a massive 33-0 edge in shots, including 16-0 in shots on goal. Matteri exited the game with several impressive saves—11 in all—saves but was undone by the constant Cavalier attack.
The strong home regular-season finale for the Cavaliers allowed the team to get playing time for all field players and celebrate its six seniors.
Jasmin Ayala (Simi Valley, Calif./Valley Christian H.S.),
Alicia Kolter (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union H.S.) and
Becca Long (Meridian, Idaho/Bishop Kelly H.S.) were honored along with Hayman, Huisingh and Ames before the game for their efforts over the past few years.
Oregon Tech finishes the season next Saturday against Southern Oregon at 3:30 p.m. in Klamath Falls. Concordia next faces Evergreen State in Olympia, Wash., on Thursday at 3 p.m., where the Cavaliers can clinch a first-round bye in the CCC tournament with a win or draw.
