Corban hands Concordia first CCC loss
PORTLAND, Ore.—Behind a Derik Chaney goal in the 63rd minute of play, Corban University defeated Concordia University 1-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action on Wednesday night.
The Warriror win avenged an earlier defeat, as Concordia defeated Corban 2-1 in Salem on Sept. 16 in the league opener for both teams.
With the win, Corban (5-3-1, 3-1-1 CCC) jumped into a tie for second place in the CCC standings along with Warner Pacific (4-2-3, 3-1-1 CCC). Concordia (5-3-0, 4-1-0 CCC), meanwhile, saw its four-match winning streak come to an end, but remains in first place in the CCC by two points.
Concordia will resume action on Saturday, Oct. 3 with a home match against Northwest Christian University. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Tuominen Yard. Corban will take the field next on Oct. 4 by facing Warner Pacific on Oct. 4.
After a combined 12 shots in the first half, Corban broke through on Chaney's first goal of the season after being setup by teammate Arsinio Walker. Working on the left side, Walker delivered a through ball to Chaney, who got past the CU defense and connected on a 15-yard blast to the far post.
Just 93 seconds into the match, Concordia produced the first dangerous chance of the game as an interception in the attacking third setup
B.J. Romac (Redding, Calif./Shasta H.S.) for a one-on-one with Corban goalkeeper Steven Mason. On the right side of the pitch and working toward the net, Romac fired from 16 yards out, but was corralled by Mason for one of his four saves in the outing.
Following the early miscue, Corban maintained much of the position in the first half and kept the Cavs from getting many quality looks at goal. After Corban scored, Concordia pressed forward in the final 15 minutes, getting one final chance on a
Timur Zhividze (Bobrov, Russia/Evergreen H.S.) header that lifted innocently above the crossbar.
Overall, Corban outshot the home side 20-8 with seven total shots on target. Concordia keeper
Mitch McCaw (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial H.S.) stopped six shots in the loss.
