Seattle Mountaineers Spoil Eagles Season Opener

KIRKLAND, Wash. – Rashaad Powell and Maazin Butler combined for 46 points as the Seattle Mountaineers defeated Northwest University, 83-70, in an exhibition game. It was the season opener for Northwest U.
 
Powell, who played for the University of Idaho, scored 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the double-double while Maazin (Montana-Western) dropped in 22 including 4 for 8 shooting from the 3-point line.
 
The two teams exchanged baskets throughout most of the half with 9 lead changes. A 3-pointer by NU’s Tomas Ogbaslassie would put the Eagles ahead 26-24. Seattle’s Jordan Estill would pull the Mountaineers to within one, 32-31 with 39 seconds to go, but NU’s Cody Shackett would get to the rim with 9 seconds in the half as Northwest took a 34-31 lead into halftime hitting 12 of 30 shots for 40% shooting.
 
Northwest U would maintain their lead into the second half and Jeremy Paull’s tip in would give NU a narrow, 42-41 lead with 16:07 remaining in the game.  Seattle would then take the momentum and outscore the Eagles 12-8 and take the lead for good with 11 minutes to go. Rashaad Powell’s drive to the rim would grow their lead to 63-49 at the 8:12 mark as the Mountaineers would maintain their lead the remainder of the game.
 
Junior Tomas Ogbaslassie led Northwest U with 14 points off the bench. Senior s Cody Shackett and CJ Carter scored 12 each and senior Jeremy Paull led the Eagles with 10 rebounds, 6 coming on offense. Freshman Marko Nikolic dropped in 11 points for the Eagles who shot 47% for the game.
 
In addition to Butler and Powell’s 46 points, Alex Wells (Lee University, Tenn.) scored 14 points. Northwest U alum, Michael Greene added 8 points and had 5 rebounds. NU grad Jason Waltman also played for the Mountaineers with 23 minutes of playing time.
 
Northwest U continues play this Friday and Saturday when they host Vancouver Island University from Nanaimo, BC for two non-conference games.
