Beacons Sweep Corban, Keep Pace in Sixth

EUGENE, Ore. – Northwest Christian University took care of business on Friday night, knocking off Corban University in three sets, 25-20, 25-20, 25-20. The win keeps the Beacons tied with Northwest University for sixth place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference, which sends the top-six teams to the post-season.

The Beacons (8-10, 5-8 CCC) hit .267 in the match while holding the Warriors to just .096 attacking. NCU out-blocked Corban 4-2 and held a 57-50 margin in digs.

NCU was led once again by outside hitter Chandler Gabrio (pictured), collecting 12 kills, nine digs and three service aces. The junior had nine of her kills to establish the pace for NCU in the first set.

Senior Chelsea McGowan had a pure night attacking the ball from the middle, collecting ten kills without an error for a .476 hitting percentage to go along with three blocks. . Cassidy Winters was right behind, hitting .375 with seven kills. Alyssa Dorr posted a double-double with 33 assists and ten digs while Sydney Rothenbush led the team with 13 digs.

Corban (5-16, 2-12) was led by Shantelle Hill, posting a team-high seven kills along with 13 digs. Haley Meili had 27 assists and eight digs while Katherine Salness led all players with a match-high 14 digs.

NCU returns to action next weekend, traveling to Kirkland, Washington on Friday night for a key matchup with Northwest at 7 p.m. NU also won on Friday, defeating Oregon Tech in five sets. A win for the Beacons next weekend would give them the season sweep and they would own the tiebreaker if they were to need it at the end of the regular season. 

Corban will also be in Washington next weekend, taking on Evergreen (13-15, 3-11) on Friday, with the first serve also scheduled for 7 p.m.
