NU Defeats VIU for Second Straight Game

KIRKLAND, Wash. – The Northwest University Eagles held Vancouver Island to 12 halftime points as they would go on to defeat the Mariners, 53-35, for their second straight win over VIU.

VIU would take an early 5-0 lead in the 9:30 a.m. start, but Northwest U would then go on a 10-0 run capped off by a Charity Degman jumper to put NU in front 10-5. Jordan Asher’s free throw would increase the Eagle lead to 19-7 with 3:16 left in the half.  Chanara Greene would score a three point play down low with three seconds left in the half to send the Eagles into the locker room with a 24-12 lead. VIU was held to just 11% shooting (3 for 27) in the half.

The Eagles would maintain a comfortable margin the entire second half as they would increase their lead to 18, 44-26, after two Hannah Carlson free throws. Victoria Makin's free throw with 57 seconds to go would give NU their largest lead, 53-33, as the Eagles would post their second win of the season.

Chanara Greene posted a double-double for Northwest U (2-0) with 15 points and 11 rebounds. She also had 6 blocks in the game. Freshman Hannah Carlson score 10 points and Brianna Fiso added 8 points. Guard Jordan Asher grabbed 9 rebounds. NU held a big edge on rebounding with a 59-43 margin.

Vancouver Island (1-2) was led by Emily Clarke’s 11 points. Amanda Tapia had 10 rebounds and scored 8 points for the Mariners.

“We’re young this year, and making some mistakes of that youth” said Ken Crawford, NU head coach, “but our effort is top notch and makes this group very coachable and an enjoyable team to be around from day to day. I see them improving as the season move forward.”
