Evergreen Fights Back to Take Down Oregon Tech

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Oregon Tech dominated tonight’s opening set versus Evergreen State, but in back-to-back nights, the Owls gave away another Cascade Collegiate Conference volleyball match, as the Geoducks rebounded for a 3-1 (9-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-23) win tonight at Danny Miles Court.

Oregon Tech falls to 20-10 on the season and now fighting for a playoff spot with a 6-8 mark in CCC play.  Evergreen improved to 13-15 on the season and 4-11 in conference action.  

A 6-0 run early in the opening set propelled the Owls to an 11-4 lead, as Tech muscled their way to a 25-9 decision in Set 1.  Kelsey Sampson led the way with six kills, followed by four kills and two aces from Renee Baumann.  Tech hit at a .519 clip.

Evergreen held a slim 16-14 lead in set 2 and next used a 6-0 run to go up 22-14.  Three Tech errors, along with kills from Ivy Eakes and Brandee Victorino in the stretch, got the Geoducks even at 1-1 with a 25-19 win.

Set 3 saw the Geoducks take a 2-1 lead after taking down Tech by a 25-20 score.  Tied at 3-all, Evergreen moved up 7-3 and held the lead throughout.  The Geoducks held a pair of eight point leads, before recording a 25-20 win. 

Four Evergreen miscues to go with a pair of Whitney Webster spikes, and one from Madisen Garlie, pushed Oregon Tech out to a 7-3 lead in Set 4, as the Owls looked to tie the match at 2-2.  Garlie, Sampson and another two kills from Webster kept Tech on top 16-11, but Evergreen stormed back to close to 19-16, and next move up 21-19, using four Tech errors and an Eakes kill to lead by two.  

Tech would tie the set at 21-all and 23-all, after Webster recorded another two kills, but Evergreen would take the match after back-to-back Victorino and Brandy Iverson kills to win 25-23.

Tech’s Kelsey Sampson finished with a team-high 14 kills, followed by Whitney Webster with 13 and Renee Baumann with 10.  Sampson and Baumann recorded double-doubles, as the pair added 10 and 22 kills, respectively.  Tori Porter recorded 26 assists and Waverly Green 21 in the loss.

Brandee Victorino and Ivy Eakes led Evergreen with 12 and 11 kills each, with Jaclyn Trinque coming up with 40 assists and Natimia Barker-Doss 39 digs to lead the Geoducks in the win.
