No. 12 Mountaineers Sweep Concordia

LA GRANDE, Ore. – In the NAIA Volleyball Match of the Week, the No. 12 Eastern Oregon University volleyball team swept the Concordia Cavaliers, 25-22, 25-15, 26-24, on Friday night at Quinn Coliseum.
 
Casey Loper and Amanda Miller led the Mountaineers with 10 kills apiece. Rachelle Chamberlain dished out a match-high, 38 assists. Jessalyn Smith recorded 21 digs on the night. Concordia's Ashely Jibby recorded a match high, 14 kills.
 
The Cavaliers looked to be taking a fast start in set one, as Concordia scored the first three points of the set. Concordia continued to hold their three point lead, 9-6, before EOU scored the next three points; two on kills by Amanda Miller to tie the set at 9-9.
 
The Mountaineers battled to take a, 16-14, lead over Concordia, however the Cavaliers scored the next five points to put the Mountaineers down three, 16-19. EOU answered right back and tied the match at19-19, after a kill by Kasundra Tuma. EOU did not give up the lead the rest of the way and took set one, 25-22.
 
Eastern Oregon's offense started clicking, to start the second set, as EOU scored seven of the first ten points. Concordia continued to battle back and trimmed EOU's lead down to three points, 9-6, after a kill by Lindsey Dorsey.
 
The Mountaineers did not let the Cavaliers get any closer in the second set as they slowly began to grow their lead. After a kill by Tuma, EOU led by nine points, 21-13. The Mountaineers took set two, 25-15. EOU hit .273 during the second set, while holding the Cavaliers to a .132 hitting percentage.
 
In a back and forth third set, EOU and Concordia did not want to take control. The Mountaineers and Cavaliers saw ten ties in the first 28 points of the set. With the scored tied at, 14-14, it looked as if the Mountaineers were starting to pull away as they extended their lead to four points, 18-14.
 
Concordia had other ideas, as they battled back to tie the set at 18-18. The Cavaliers continued to battle and took a, 24-22, lead and forced EOU to call a timeout. The Mountaineers responded as they scored the last four points of the match. Katina Ferguson capped off the sweep of the Cavaliers by recording the match setting kill.
 
With the(insert "this") win the Mountaineers move into a three way tie for first place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference.
 
EOU returns to action tomorrow, Oct. 4th, when they host Warner Pacific College at 3 p.m. at Quinn Coliseum. Concordia travels to Caldwell, Idaho to face College of Idaho at 5 p.m. MT.
