Northwest Advances to CCC Title Game
KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest University scored two second half goals to defeat the Evergreen State College, 2-0, in a CCC semifinal match-up and advance to the Cascade Conference Championships final, presented by U.S, Bank.
Neither team could manage a score in the first half as the defenses held strong along with the goalkeepers with each grabbing three saves to prevent a score.
Northwest U’s Jacob Weaver finally put the Eagles on the scoreboard when he dribbled up the left side, shot and then left footed the rebound off the Evergreen goalkeeper into the right corner of the net from 18 yards out on the left side.
The Eagles then scored the game clincher at the 78:18 mark when Weaver centered the ball to Kyle Zimmerman 20 yards out in the middle and Zimmerman finished with a blast into the upper center of the goal.
Daniel Christenson earns the shutout for Northwest U and finished with 5 saves. Angel Guerra took the loss in goal for the Geoducks as he also stopped 5 Northwest U shots on goal. NU had a 16-9 advantage in shots and corner kicks were even at 5 per team. Josimar Evangelista had 5 shots for NU while Tanner Williams tallied 5 shots for Evergreen. NU played without co-captain and leading scorer, Taylor Young, who sat out today's game with an injury.
Said Gary McIntosh, NU head coach, following the game, “The playoffs are tough and they should be. I give credit to Evergreen for coming out and competing well today. I’m proud of the guys for competing and finding a way to win today. We played for selfless soccer today.The defense was outstanding in getting the shutout and Daniel (Christenson) was great in goal. The goals by Jacob (Weaver) and Kyle (Zimmerman) were top notch. It’s an excellent win for us and the soccer program.”
The Eagles will await to play the winner of the Concordia-Corban CCC semifinal being played in Portland later this afternoon.
