CC- How did you choose Evergreen to continue your athletic and academic career?

RB- First off, when I visited my senior year of high school, I appreciated hearing about the academic style of learning at Evergreen and thought it would be beneficial to my learning. I thought the idea of seminar would be essential to my growth and my success both as a student and athlete. Moreover, I appreciated the diversity of the school after being on campus for a day. After speaking with the coaching staff in spring of 2010, I was pleased with the first impressions. Additionally, with the basketball program being a fairly new program to Evergreen, I thought it would be a great opportunity to make school history as a team.

CC- What are some of the demands of being a student athlete?

RB- As an athlete, it is crucial to manage your time. Between school, practice, and traveling to games, it is essential that time is balanced in order to be able to complete homework assignments and get to class on time. Moreover, the responsibility falls on the athlete to complete assignments, receive all your credits because your teammates and coaches are counting on you to be able to play. How can your teammates and coaches expect you to work hard on the court if you don’t work hard in the classroom?  On the basis of time management, it is just as important to allow yourself to have a social life as well outside of school, practice and games. Furthermore, giving back to your community is also very important. Your community has been a part of your successes as a student and athlete, and also has taken its place within your/our support system as a program.

CC- What are some of your best experiences so far, both academically and athletically at college?

RB- Academically, I have enjoyed watching my progress over the course of college as a student. It has been rewarding to see that growth transfer on to the court and outside of school. In the classroom, I have had a few wonderful teachers that have made learning and coming to class a new experience every day. As far as athletically, I have had the pleasure in watching my teammates grow. With all of our teamwork, we have continued to set a higher bar of expectations each season and as a result, we have consecutively made playoffs for the past three seasons. It was inspiring to be a part of the hard work with my teammates during the 2013-2014 season and celebrate my former head Coach, Monica Heuer be named CCC Conference Coach of the year. Each year, we have continued to grow as a team and program. As a senior, I am looking forward to this 2014-2015 season, to continue down a successful path with returning teammates, new teammates and also our new head coach, Jenn Schooler.

CC- Who are some influential people in your life at TESC?

RB- My family, my friends, my teammates, my professors (Specifically, Frances Rains, Dr. Joye Hardiman, and Kabby Mitchell) and my coaching staff have all contributed to influencing my life at Evergreen. My life outside of school has been a huge part of my success at Evergreen. With only being an hour and a half away from home, my family has supported me through all that I have accomplished. My father has been an inspiration in my life and has continued to push me to excel in everything. Despite the distance, my mother, my little sister and the rest my family from my hometown (New Orleans) have also played huge roles as well.

CC- When not competing or studying what do you do for fun?

RB- I enjoy playing my trumpet, speaking Spanish, spending time with my family/friends, traveling, snowboarding, and also just playing sports.

CC- What do you hope to accomplish as a member of the CCC-SAAC?

RB- I hope to make a difference. I hope that working with other fellow members of the CCC-SAAC will allow us as student athletes to bond together, discuss issues affecting student athletes at each of our schools and in turn, come together to find a solution to these issues such as attendance rules across programs, faculty support towards student athletes, and also awareness about athletic events across campus, etc. Furthermore, I hope to help student athletes increase their understanding of the CCC and NAIA while also making sure, that student athletes on campus are aware that their voice always matters.

CC- What do you see yourself doing after graduation?

RB- After graduation, I plan on traveling some. My plan is to travel abroad, more specifically, to Spain and hopefully receive some international experience. My ultimate goal is to either be within the interpreting business or work for the U.S. Embassy.
